And in Singapore this weekend, the U.S. Defense Secretary joined the chorus of voices condemning the Burmese junta's handling of disaster relief in the regions worst hit by cyclone Nargis. Meanwhile, we have new footage of villagers who claim the junta is forcing them back into the affected areas without food or shelter. Here's more:
STORY: U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Saturday that the Burmese generals were responsible for tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths, because of their refusal to allow large quantities of foreign aid into the worst-hit areas. [Robert Gates, U.S. Secretary of Defense]: "We have reach
ed out on a number of occasions, I think he told me this morning, 15 different times, to the leadership of Myanmar, to open up. So it has not been us that have been deaf and dumb in response to the pleas of the international community, but the government of Myanmar. We have reached out, they kept th
eir hands in their pockets." Gates' remarks, the toughest yet by a U.S. official, came at an annual gathering of Asian security and defense officials in Singapore. The official toll of dead and missing from the cyclone is now over 134,000. An estimated 2.4 million people have been left homeless.
Also over the weekend, the Democratic Voice of Burma released new footage of Burmese villagers, who say they were forced out of a refugee camp and back into they devastated village, without a promise of food or relief supplies. The villagers said they they had been given clothes and rice in their r
efugee camp by private donors, but nothing from the government forces. One villager said he heard that some private donors had been prevented by the authorities from driving to help refugees.
