He didn't crash into a forest. The area that he was flying over was a heavily populated area. The pilot did the smart thing by keeping the plane in control, if he had ejected then the plane could have potentially hit a nearby shopping center/apartment buildings.

I work right across the street from where this happened... everything about this guy being heroic is bullshit. He crashed 112 yds from this teeny little field but just 236 yds north was a massive industrial park with enough open space to land a 747. Fire-up google earth
see for yourself... he crashed @ 45deg 32.171'N by 122deg 55.205'W. Accidents happen, shit breaks

you don't crash into an industrial park nimrod! Granted there is enough space to land a 747 you have to realize a 747 requires a 7,000 ft landing strip and the amount of fuel stored at and around industrial parks can be catastrophic if ignited.
