lol..its not that they are making fun of violator...the director(Anton Corbijn) thought this would be the last time he would see dave alive due to his heavy drug use at this time so this video was sort of his version of a tribute to all of his past work with depeche mode because he swore dave would be dead afterwards...thats why there are so many references to past videos that he did in this one!

thanks for all the insight people. Learned alot. Music for the masses era was indeed the darkest for depeche. Look at the magic they give us now:) Im glad I was born in 79 just in time for depeche.

Not a drug song.
Martin L Gore wrote this inspired by watching his then infant daughter sleeping. The song is about the hold on him that his baby has. Of course, because it's a Depeche Mode song, it sounds more dark and sinister than it actually is. "Precious" is the answer song to this.

Never heard of this song being connected to Martin's daughter - where did you read that? I know "Precious" is about the effects of divorce on his children, because he stated that publicly several times. First time I've come across any kind of specific inspirational reference for this song though.
