depends, are you new to all musical instruements or you play something else. I'm so lucky, i played drums and guitar first and bass came to me really easy.
First decide how you will play, with a pick or fingers? Fingers is better is reckon :)/
Then pick a bassist who really inspires you and then decide to play with that style. Also, use left right left right with fingers, slower then faster to begin with to get rhytm in your fingers. i'm not an excellent bassist, but this works for me!

Honestly, it really depends. Do you have any experience with other instruments? Maybe drums or guitar? Are you taking lessons, or will you be self-taught? And finally, how often will you practice? If you practice often, get a schedule going, get your scales DOWN and learn from the best (like Vic up there), the learning curve for bass is not too steep. If you're serious, it will come easy. So be serious about it!
