Judging from the video and the "black flag sticker" lyric change, I think the guys totally missed the point of this song. They turned this song into a Pop-punk cliche...what a mess of a cover.

yeah because the dead head sticker on the cadillac symbolized that rock generation's icon the grateful dead (its debatable lol) these guys seemed like they wanted that song to be their own and be considered punk rock no longer classic rock. but then you also see the early hints at punk rock in the don henley version. it was a rebellious going against the flow song and it made you rock out even bein a kid. like how easy it was to make it punk rock rather than makin a completely different melody.

Well, (this is merely my interpetation) the deadhead sticker line symbolized the loss of innocence and his memories for the girl he lost. Some people think this song is straight-forward but I think it's a bit allegorical. I think this was more than a love song, but I'm sure someone will disagree (which I have no problem with). Also, I don't see any hints at punk rock in Don's version and I don't think it had any rebellious undertones. I see this as a lament more than anything.
