Look up Mbube on Youtube for a list of performers. Originally in 1939 in South Africa by Solomon Linda, then by Pete Seeger with the Weavers in the 1950s, then of course the Tokens got hold of the song and it became the ubiquitous "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in 1961. Also search Youtube for Solomon Linda (can't post URL here) Solomon Linda's Mbube became synonymous with that style of African close harmony... he was a genius who didn't get the credit he deserved.

I have another recording of these guys doing it better; ex pre facto Limewire. They must have been working to perfect it. I like it rough like it is here. My understanding is that Solomon LInda didn't mind Pete's version, or the Token's, or the Kingston Trio, but when Disney exploited it in the Film version of the Lion King, Solomon Linda's relatives sued and I hope they got a fat settlement.

And take a look at the keyword "also", where I was pointing out to other youtube users that they should check them out....
Stop looking for things where there isn't anything to look for!

Actually, the song ... ( 7 months ago by richyyyy)
Actually, the song was written by Solomon Linda and first recorded by The Evening Birds. And unfortunately over time digressed to this version and eventually making it's way into the greedy hands of Disney as well. By the way the translation of the lyrics that he reads at the beginning are complete BS. There is actually a documentary out based on the journey of this song as it's really quite amazing, it's called "A Lion's Trail".

Wondereful,I first saw these guys in Atlanta,'65 they were AWESOME.They finished with "When the Saints Go Marching In." Next saw the KT in 1969 after Stewart left, working at the Bistro,Atlanta. One of the replacements was a guy named Connor I believe. He had talent equal to Guard and Stewart(well almost).Folk had given way to the british invasion.I was going to Vietnam and I spent all my leave going to hear these guys. Shane did "Don't make promises you can't keep." It was a great song for him.
