I don't get the metronum part though. Why does he always have it tick when he's in bed?
re. the metronome ... ( 7 months ago by LateGreatBillHicks)
re. the metronome question ;
Morgan Freeman's character [the cop] is a very meticulous, precise
exact person [just like the killer he seeks]...
and I think the metronome appeals to these qualities in the cop. As it too is precise
meticulous in the way it keeps perfect timing.
Many people would find that constant tick-ticking maddening
it would keep them awake.. but it probably sends him easily to sleep.
Possibly he throws it as he's now very disillusioned at this point in his life.
Thank you for that ... ( 7 months ago by norina195)
Thank you for that rational answer. I think it helped.
Then how do you explain why Somerset broke the metronome in the middle of the movie? What do you think is the symbolic significance of smashing it?
I havent seen Se7en ... ( 7 months ago by LateGreatBillHicks)
I havent seen Se7en for about 5 years, I thought you saw the cop break it near the very start, then the opening credits come. [?]
Maybe when he started on the job he was certain his view on life
his nature would make a big difference to crime in the city?
And from the speech he gives Brad Pitt about the mugger stabbing his victim in the eyes for no reason, it seems like later he's thinking all his effort
hard work didnt really amount to anything in the final analysis.
LateGreatBillHicks ... ( 7 months ago by mateodawkins)
LateGreatBillHicks is wrong... Sommerset utilizes the metronome as an aid, a tool if you will. It helps him think. He's very systematic and logical in his approach to solving crimes... The rythm tends to help.
What you're supposed to draw from him smashing the metronome is that the John Doe case is too complex for systematic, logical deduction. The scene is to demonstrate his frustrations with the case....
