...What? Matt ... ( 5 months ago by BeBop08)
...What? Matt Wallace came out and bursted out with fire and soul, just took the stage presence and killed it. I'm a hardcore jazz listener and purist, I know a good solo and a bad solo when I hear one, and this my friend, was a nasty solo. Go Matt, fuck you.

dude im a hard core jazz "purist" ok. the last time someone double timed body and soul was charlie parker! AND HE GOT BOOED..hello!!!
this video is chap ok? do you understand that. no you dont because you most likely live in a corn field in the mid west or live in houston or in new york where the jazz is just straight bebop and the scene is dying there.
Maynard does ... ( 2 months ago by ChaoticEuphoria)
Maynard does deserve to be classified as one of the best. But NOT because he was good at improvisation. You can't compare Maynard to Hubbard, Miles, Dizzy, Shaw, or Brown. Maynard's strength was as a LEAD trumpet player in a BIG BAND. His tremendous range, power, and endurance has never been matched. Even the late Bill Chase, who was 10 times better than Maynard in improvisation couldn't match Maynard's range and power. Maynard was great and unique in his own right, one of a kind, deeply missed!
Chaotic with all ... ( 1 month ago by UpperRegister)
Chaotic with all due respect I disagree with you when you talk about Mayanrd's improv skills. You're probably to young to remember Maynard's Roulette collection from the 50's and early 60's. If you checkout his trumpet work from that period he was playing much more hard core jazz with great improv work. Most young people don't even know of Maynard's trumpet work prior to the late 70's when Rocky came out. Bill Chase had very limited jazz chops he was mostly a screamer and lead type player.
In fact when Chase ... ( 1 month ago by UpperRegister)
In fact when Chase was on the band with Maynard for a brief time he didnt play any of the jazz book. When he went on to Woody Herman's band he played a little jazz, however, again Chase is definitely not noted for his jazz chop prowess
I respect your ... ( 1 month ago by ChaoticEuphoria)
I respect your point of view UpperRegister. But I think we will have to agree to disagree. Granted, I didn't start listening to Maynard until about 1972. But if you look at Maynard's body of work from the early 70's until his death, over 30 years, what did he choose to empahsize? Big Band. I am not taking anything away from his accomplishments. Maynard was a GREAT trumpet player. No one has matched his range and power even today as far as I know.
In fact, he was my ... ( 1 month ago by ChaoticEuphoria)
In fact, he was my idol in high school because I played lead trumpet in my high school jazz ensemble. I dreamed of being able to play a "Double High C" like Maynard could. The best I could do was a "Double High G". But Maynard was not a great improvisationalist in contrast to Clark Terry, Hubbard, Miles, Dizzy, Shaw, or Brown. But at the same time, not ONE of these guys could do what Maynard did! Maynard was GREAT and UNIQUE in his own right.
Oh I agree I ... ( 1 month ago by UpperRegister)
Oh I agree I wouldn't put him on the same level as Diz or Woody Shaw insofar as jazz improv, however, I disagree with the comment about Bill Chase being ten times better than Maynard at jazz playing, that just isnt so. Chase played no jazz when he was on the band with Maynard, when Chase went to play with Woody's herd he played a little jazz but not that much. Chase is more along the lines of Bud Brisbois a screamer who was noted for his jazz/rock fusion during the early to late 70's.

No Don Ellis was a great jazz player who came through Maynard's band about the same time Chase did

lol. Okay. I will agree with you there. But I was never really a big Don Ellis fan. I have a couple of his LP's. I would listen to them from time to time. Don't tell anyone, but I even have a couple of Chuck Mangione's LP's hiding in the stack. lol.

Hey I love Chuck Mangione's playing he was a great innovator for his time and wrote a lot of great charts. I think because of Chuck I had to go out and purchase a flugel horn lol
