ibanezmaster: your name suggests you are a guitar player, but your name does not. "It doesn't matter which fingers you use as long as you hit the right note"...you're kidding, right? Correct fingering is there for a good reason so it makes the next note easier to reach, posture is correct etc

But technically, if you hit the next note perfectly, does it matter where your hand is?
Yes, because where ... ( 1 month ago by meaning1)
Yes, because where your hand is determines how well you can reach to hit the next note. It's all there for a reason. They didn't just come up with correct fingering to annoy people.

Not so and no ... ( 1 month ago by notnomistakes)
Not so and no disrespect intended. That's old school thinking and it limits your playing. You have five digits on the left hand not four. I was taught the same thing as you and I now believe that it's limiting. Look at all the great players of jazz, rock with less for classical and you see the thumb being used. Please try it for yourself. Play a D chord and place your thumb on the second fret of the low E string for an f#. It ads some tonal flavor.
Thank you for the lesson helisell!

reply to meaning1 regarding thumb
Using your thumb ... ( 1 month ago by meaning1)
Using your thumb over the neck does not add "tonal flavour" And I did originally use my thumb before I had a lesson, and it is limiting. There is a reason people say to keep your thumb in the centre and thats because it allows you to change to lower and higher chords more efficiently and play scales quicker. Having your thumb over the top limits how well you can move about.

Let me clarify. My thumb is in the middle much of the time but not using your thumb limits you. Again four vs five. Also, it's possible to play a base part with your thumb while you play chords and lead with your fingers. This is what many jazz players do. The tonal flavor I meant was on that particular D major chord. If you let the low E string ring open that adds a 9 but if you use your thumb on the 2nd fret you have an F# which is the 3rd of a D major chord

meaning1 and notno: you guys are really debating over the two main types of hand positions. I call one "technical hand" where the thumb is behind the neck approx. in line/across from the 1st finger. Traditionally used for classical, but a must for prog rock ala Steve Howe and techrock ala Vai, Satriani etc. The other hand position is "blues hand" where your thumb grabs the neck so you can support great ,aggressive bends ala SRV, Clapton etc.
Strive for great technique-with your own style!

This is called a D6 inversion (6 shud be written like an exponent). Your just putting the 3rd of the d chord (d f# a) in the bass.

I took classical in my teens & was taught mid thumb. In my twenties from all around rock & jazz players taught the same. Now at 56 I want to use my thumb & it's a struggle. I agree with you, players like John Mayer, Hendrix are great 'blues hand' examples. There fingers are long and slender which appears to help. My fat fingers can cover two strings with one finger tip but I can't reach around with the thumb very well to play a B9 chord on the 7th fret (SRV Tightrope).
