No, it really is about slavery. Tons of his songs are facetious, don't be surprised. Despite the patriotic sound that it's got, it's pretty obvious. The foods he mentions, the terms and phrases he uses, "run through the jungle," Charleston Bay, etc. How can you seriously say otherwise? It's not a reason to be upset about it either. In fact, it's a reason to like it even more; why do people try to not believe it?

His songs are about sarcastic satyre, he sings about slavery, midgets, rednecks, anything. It's meant to be humorous, it's an intelligent humor, not some foolish potty humor, thats why most people don't understand it.

A few things; the watermelon, the jungle, the mighty ocean, the animals; it should have all rung a bell or two for you guys. It's obvious that it's not a patriotic song and that the listener has to read between the lines. The song itself is rather looming and depressing.

For stupid people..this song is racist. they will read into the watermelon etc... NEXT...irony... It is an anti racist song. Lastly... the sail away? Does it mean... sail away to the US and YOU will find an new life and even after years of slavery find it the land of opportunity? OR...Sail away.

Perhaps you should think twice before calling other people stupid. It is a song about the slavers who fed the African kids a load of lies about going to the idyllic New World, only to end up slaves. It is the white slaver luring them to sail away across the ocean, where they'll eat watermelon, sing and drink wine all day -- escape wild beasts and poisonous snakes. Charleston was one of the major slave ports.
