You don't have to run all the crazy effects with Ubuntu if you don't want to (in fact, all the crazy stuff requires extra packages to be installed). If you run a Linux OS at the same sort of "effects level" as Vista, you'll use less resources. Vista is notoriously resource-hungry - but you can't stop it. Why not try an Ubuntu LiveCD and try it for yourself? It's free, and if you choose to install it you can install it as well as Windows on the same machine - dual boot.

Ubuntu is essentially just a user-friendly, stable Debian. In other words, it's Debian for people who don't want to spend half their life configuring their machine... lol

I've been on linux for a couple of months and I'm thinking of switching back to windows - my ZOOM H4 external audio interface for recording doesn't work smoothly with ubuntu and ardour or audacity and JACK is the biggest non-user-friendly headache in the world !!

I personally like all the fancy effects and such, and linux is better than windows in terms of stability and resources, but games are more fun than pretty effects. so vista wins IMO until developers get some linux compatibility going

As for me, I have forgotten about windows 1 year ago, as for me Ubuntu is like a breath of fresh air, regarding games - wine is making progress can you imaging I am playing WOW on my linux PC!!!

Any openGL based game will run natively in Linux. This includes just about every first person shooter game. These games will also perform much better under linux. As for DirectX only games, they will run under WINE. BTW Wine stands for
¨Wine Is Not an Emulator¨. It an interpreter for the windows API, so it doesnt bogg down like an emulator. It has direct memory access and full processor usage. There is no performance loss under WINE !!!

Well, enough people to warrant composite effects being prominent in both windows and alternatives. It is all done by your GPU anyway, so unless you're rendering some big 3D model, it won't have a performance hit.

linux will never be able to do absolutely everything windows does (i.e. if something is of economic importance, bill will jump on it..) but considering linux is free it's great. it deserves more exposure. windows should be an optional extra when you buy a PC

I had a Vista laptop, I felt good with it, but Vista was holding me back. Now I'm dual-booting Kubuntu for day-to-day stuff / Linux learning and XP for gaming. My Pentium II over there is installing xubuntu right now.

Ha, I love the ending. That's one of my favorite clips of all time. I really wish I could run Linux all the time, but unfortunately I don't have the hardware needed to run WINE so I can play all my games. I wish game production companies would start supporting Linux, but I guess it's hard with all the different distros there are. For now, I just settle for dual-booting and running XP when I want to play games.
