An incredible, beautiful, terrifying film about living and dying. An Ingmar Bergman masterpiece, with his keynote superb performances, cinematography and editing. All of his films are treasures.

¡Notable! Una enorme demostración de cómo en el cine habla el silencio. Y, además -en estos minutos iniciales- algo así como un racconto de toda la obra de Bergman: relojes, adornos, estatuas...

So slow... so quiet ...( 1 year ago by DorisSjogrenRowe)
So slow... so quiet... so much red... perhaps an influence from "The Red Room" by Henri Matisse reaches the depth of emotion and fear of bodily death. The scene when the nursemaid said her prayers then took a bite into a big juicy red apple has lingered in my mind all these years. The portrayal of a cruel and self-centered husband picking the meat from his fish at a handsomely outfitted dinner table... and the bedroom scene to follow... makes this film a masterpiece for me.

Bergman's known for writing strong women characters, but this is his best in that regard. And MAN is there a lot of red in just these scenes alone.

My favourite of Bergman's films, and absolutely one of the most apocalyptic and super depressive stories I've ever seen and felt in the seventh art. Magnificent, Perfect!

SWEDISH CINEMA
When I remember the scenes of our life together,
I imagine them happening on the silver screen.
You stand up close against me,
A white shirt, a subtle smile,
And look to me warmly and say
Words the heroine whispers to the hero.
I hear violins when you kiss me.
Were it possible, these,
The flickering moments to capture,
I would replay this celluloid forever.

I've never seen an Ingmar Bergman film, but I definitely want to.
This scene reminds of me of Edvard Munch [even though he isn't Swedish :S], in that they depict something simple, but yet it appears ominous.
