i see no reason just why someone can't use a steam locomotive if the burns natural gas instead of oil or coal? deisel is way too hi in price nowadays. making then would creat many jobs . and less dependant on foreign oil at the same time!

Is this the old, Steam Vs Diesel Rebuttle again? pfft. Diesel can get their full traction effort unlike steam engines wich have more avaliable TE, but cannot get it due to slipping and other problems. NOW, If a steam loco had an engine in the tender powerfull enough to help take off so the wheels woudnt slip (the engine is a motor powered by the steam of course,) and it could get its full power. If we apply modern tech to steam, steam engines could roam the rails again someday.

Some steam did have boosters hung on the trailing truck. It utilized some the steam already produced to add TE, but was only good up to 15mph.

Diesel is more efficient, but there will never be a picture as nice as a full blown steam locomotive underway. I used to ride the Reading Railroad 2100's when I was a kid because my father worked at the Reading Car Shops. Have you ever seen a round house full of steam locomotives? I used to climb all over them, and believe me, you can't buy memories like that.

Thank u. Finally someone is saying the same thign as me. Diseal fuel is crazy these days, but it would be impossible for Coal cause it can pollute the atmosphere, But Oil it could do well. UP(Union Pacific) uses Oil for both 3985 and 844. Besides were damn lucky that we still have these 3/4ths of those Steam Locomotives were scraped. But UP Saved alot of Big Boys, If That were an oil burner I would bring that back and use a Tripple header, 844-3985,4014. Thats the order, 4014 in front. I agree
