I was thinking the same thing. Their transporters are really low budget. Also, Spock didn't beam down to the planet in The Man Trap initially. It was Kirk, McCoy and a crewman. Additionally, Kirk didn't have his phaser when he fought the Gorn. He built a bazooka out of materials he found around. And McCoy killed the salt creature in his quarters, not in some dungeon.
