I think i totally understand what he is trying to say, and it is unbiblical. Absolutely, we are to run to God in times of trouble. However, tell me this...did God get more glory from someone praising him while a little girl died in his arms, or did the Lord get more glory when a young girl was raised from the dead (Luke 8).
Keep it simple and you wont get into error. Jesus came so that we have life and life more abundantly, it is the devil who comes to steal, kill and destroy.

Why is it that some people think that they are more spiritual when they let the devil steal, kill and destroy themselves and everything around them. If you want to truly suffer (in the biblical sense, i suggest you use all of your "suffering" in resisting sin (Hebrews 2:18). the only problem with this is that it will actually require some personal effort, whereas the other form of suffering that you seem to admire is mostly just a false form of spiritual pride

I dont believe that God promises us money is going to rain down from heaven. He does however instruct his that wisdom (understanding of his word) will increase our financial wealth (amongst its other benefits; refer Proverbs 3:16).
The people i know who are 'suffering' most have little time for anyone else. Surely God gets greater glory from someone who is busy helping other people, than someone who is suffering in sickness or depression.

Lets analyze Lazarus and the rich man. If rich people cant get into heaven, then where will King David end up? The poor man was at Lazarus' door everyday and Lazarus did nothing to take care of him....that was his sin, not because he was rich.
Look at Matt 25:34-46, when we take care of those in need, Jesus says we are taking care of him.
In other words, our energy and resources should be spent helping people, not building pretty church buildings and the like.

Hey justinr1000, for me the question is: what do we most love God for - His blessings or Himself? It's worth remebering that this is a snippet from a talk, not a full theology of suffering and blessing. Someone (not Piper) has extracted the snippet and made a video. I thank God for his many, many blessings, I strive to use them for His purposes, and I pray that I may know and love Him enough so that when tragedy strikes - when the Lord takes away - I will say "Blessed be the Name of the Lord!"

AMEN! I agree with the Word of God. Jesus is enough now and for eternity. At the cross of Calvary and at the empty tomb or His resurrection, He gave all I ever could ask or want. I thank You Lord for this gift. I thank You for even giving the faith to believe! My chains are gone. I am set free. Praise the Lord my sin is washed away! I only live because He lives.

This sermon was great, but it's time to awaken. The romans have lied to us all. Christs name is not jesus, that is the name of the antichrist. The name is not a translation or a transliteration it is a deception. The Romans have lied to us.Messiah's real name is "YAHUSHUA". The romans wouldn't use that name because they were antisemetics just like satan has aways been. We have to go back to the root. God is calling us back to the early church this roman church is the road to the antichrist.

You have added some clarity to the issue. It is not that a person may be blessed by God BUT what a person does with the blessing. The sin that leads to hell is when man puts the love of possession & monetary wealth ahead of loving God(#1) & loving others (#2). The story of the rich young ruler was the same situation. He loved his possession above loving his Savior. He was able to keep his wealth & lifestyle but sacrificed his eternal spiritual life in Heaven with the Father.

Even then, when a man or woman does place God & others before possession, there is another sin waiting to snare us - pride & arrogance. We can get addicted to the feeling of being praised and honor. NO matter the good we try to do, guarding our hearts from stumbling is a daily chore.
I agree about how to use our resources. Our Messiah is not coming back for bricks, mortar, shrines and so forth. He is coming back to gather His people. Our hearts can be His temple now.

I dont' think it is what Rome or another nations have called the Messiah, but the man-made, false religions which defile the One true God & the Gospel's message of real redemption from sin. In Hebrew, the Messiah's name is Yeshua - The name the Jewish believers use. The name Jesus means - God with us. Christ (Savior)is a term/label begun by a Greek man in the early church. In Greek it is "christianos" to describe how the faithful would act like Christ. I use "follower of The Way".

You are missing the point. Even if the economy fails so what, are hope is in heaven. That is the point, you got people killing themselves b/c they lose all the have. But we know that we have something no one can ever take away from us. There are so much wrong with the prosperity gospel. I hope you can see his point.

my words got scrambled butI'm trying to say that if you shop at Ambercrombie or appreciate those that do then you must enjoy prosperity. Is that where you shop or do you shop at the SAlvation Army Thrift store and avoid prosperity. If prosperity is bad don't enjoy it. If it is good then don't criticize it.
