Even for a non-musical fan, this sequence is really beautiful. It captures the heart and it makes you care. that's what great films - and the musical score- do to the audience. And on that merit alone, it's pure magic.

I saw the movie some time ago and thought it aged a lot... I didnt feel the same as when I saw it in the 60's. It's kind of naive... There was a code of honor in the fights of the 2 rival groups that I think is gone today. Bernstein's music, however, is vibrant and captivating and the dance scenes are great!

It's partly having to do with the fact that outside of this, Saul Bass has had a whole career full of innovative, memorable opening credit sequences. This may not be his best, but his name carries weight because of work done on Psycho, Vertigo, The Age of Innocence, Seconds, Spartacus, Cape Fear (remake), etc etc...

we just finished watching this in music class today. i couldnt stop crying when Chino killed Tony. and im serously still crying and that happened like 2 hours ago. i cried when Riff and Bernardo died. i love the songs but serously this is all Anitas fault 'cause she said that Maria was dead. and im still crying and im just so sad.

This is a great clip. I remember when I first saw this movie. My mom and sister made me watch it when I was about 7. I hated it. Then when I became a teen and saw it again, I fell in love with it. I didn't care about all the guys dancing around. It was a wonderful love story and still is.

These are some of the best Titles to a movie I have ever experienced, I say experience because that's what it is. I saw this film at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood in 70mm and it was the best looking film I have ever seen (experienced). I haven't experienced anything like that from that night forward.
This Title sequence is just the best, it gave me chills looking at it again.

This IS one of the best title sequences ever - and one of the great pieces of underrated Modern Art. Every time the lines go white at the end and dissolve into Manhattan I shiver - and it takes the slow build of the music and the colour changes over the five-ish minutes to bring on that shiver. Really incredible. Truly, they don't make 'em like they used to. (And Boris Leven's quasi-expressionistic sets ain't bad either!)

I am a HUGE fan of this overture and like to sing along ("Tonight, tonight, won't be just any night...."). Unfortunately, Youtube crippled the sound of this clip. Do yourself a favor and get this movie on DVD, which sounds infinitely better.
