He pulled the chute as soon as he left the ramp if not earlier. Watch the part where you see the car from the rear going up the ramp. Something is already coming off the car before it even leaves the ramp. I agree, he never meant to complete this jump. Only an idiot would try this and think they could make it.

Thats not the whole story, this is part of a 1 hour movie about it all and Powers was called in at the last minute to do the driving from memory. Takes balls to be strapped in and do that, I doubt the people laughing here would do the same, i know i wouldn't. I wonder if the ramp is still there after all these years?
