Internationally acclaimed author and journalist Norman Mailer discusses his views on national pride, the Iraq war, and American Neoconservatives. This excerpt is taken from a program in which Norman Mailer talks with authors Gunter Grass and Andrew O'Hagan on the topic of "The 20th Century on Tri
al," and was recorded in collaboration with the New York Public Library. ----- The New York Public Library presents "The 20th Century on Trial" with Norman Mailer and Gunter Grass. Born in the 1920s, Gunter Grass and Norman Mailer went on to become grand men of letters. They witnessed the 20th ce
ntury at close quarters. At the center of each writer's consciousness is the role of their respective countries in World War II and the legacy of violence and guilt that created the Cold War. Yet as stylists these two novelists appeared to internalize the great forces of their times: the appeal of t
otalitarianism and the cult of celebrity, the struggle for national definition and the psychology of sex. Mailer and Grass set out to create revolutions in the consciousness of their times, and now might be the moment to ask how the 20th century itself emerges from their work. What was that century
? What would they write for its epitaph? Nobel Prize-Winner Gunter Grass's memoir "Peeling the Onion" takes him back to his wartime childhood and adolescence - it is a searing book that provides evidence on behalf of the self-accusing. Norman Mailer's latest novel, "The Castle in the Forest," is his
take on Hitler's own youth. These two great writers have come full circle, to the same place and time, and their creativity puts the 20th century itself on trial - The New York Public Library Norman Mailer (1923 - 2007) was born to a Jewish family in Long Branch, New Jersey. He was brought up in B
rooklyn, New York, graduated from Boys' High School and when he was only sixteen was admitted to Harvard University in 1939, where he studied aeronautical engineering. At the university, he became interested in writing and published his first story when he was 18. Mailer was drafted into the Army in
World War II and served in the South Pacific. In 1948, just before enrolling in the Sorbonne in Paris, he published a book that made him world-famous: The Naked and the Dead, based on his personal experiences during World War II. It was hailed by many as one of the best American novels to come out
of the war years and named one of the "100 best novels in English language" by the Modern Library. Other famous works include: The Presidential Papers (1963), An American Dream (1965), Why Are We in Vietnam? (1967), Armies of the Night (1968, awarded a Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award), Miami
and the Siege of Chicago (1968), Of a Fire on the Moon (1970), The Prisoner of Sex (1971), Marilyn (1973), The Fight (1975), The Executioner's Song (1979, awarded a Pulitzer Prize), Ancient Evenings (1983), Harlot's Ghost (1991), Oswald's Tale (1995), and The Castle in the Forest (2007). In 1968 h
e received a George Polk Award for his reporting in Harper's Magazine. Norman Mailer passed away on November 10, 2007, at the age of 84.

rayban, ive never seen someone so ill informed. and so blatently stupid.
What, when you look ... ( 7 months ago by rayban5016)
What, when you look in the mirror? You really need to your homework before making allegations. Think about it, socialized health car the government will control when you see a doctor, what is covered, if you're seen and what the doctor is paid. Conservatives are for the free market solution; which is kind of what we have now, only government regulation has made the cost sky rocket, that and frivolous law suits. I hope this little lesson will help your self esteem. You really are just ill-formed.
trust me ive lived ... ( 7 months ago by davewuensche)
trust me ive lived in a social state my whole entire life, payed taxes and reaped the benefits of a system that, although has its ups and downs, has covered me and my family from womb to death.
Ah, isn't that nice ... ( 7 months ago by rayban5016)
Ah, isn't that nice. Big Daddy government kept you all nice and safe, how sweet! I'm sure you were on the low end of paying taxes. But you know the government doesn't actually make money, it takes money and then redistributes it. I understand that there is a basic need for structure and government should provide that. But it does not need to butt into mine or anybody else's life. People should be as rich or as poor as they want, that is the great capitalist way. USA USA USA! God Bless America!

Well I'm glad that you realized that you are no match. You have a nice life as well. I just hope you don't die waiting in line to see a doctor in your socilized medicane.
Rayban how many ... ( 7 months ago by DatFwad)
Rayban how many people want to be poor?? Your argument is ridiculous.
Your the standard ... ( 7 months ago by distressed7)
Your the standard twit that cannot separate a beneficial leadership and a destructive and selective one. Let's see what factory work, trade union work you've done. Mailer is smart. At least he did not join the guard during WWII. But again, Bush he's different, in his mind. So are his ilk because they are hoping that no one will catch on to the difference between guarding the weak and the less born priveleged. Then leaving people be to perform on a somewhat level playing field. You are so lame.
There is no free ... ( 7 months ago by distressed7)
There is no free market in a corporate fascism. None. You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why since Union decline in the last 30 years have we declined as a self-sustaining nation economically? You use such generalized terms, like Conshit Free Market Solution. Now the chickens are coming home to roost and all the right wing rhetoric is at best akin to some slovenly drunken bank president has been in the gutter of skid row. All his strength and his prestige was based upon failed money
So, when your time ... ( 7 months ago by distressed7)
So, when your time comes for Medicare and any government help you'll blow it out the window. God Bless Amerika? Which god? The god of selfishness and greed? I always knew the devil was at the pulpit talkin' shit about a Jesus he'd kill again in a heartbeat. This is another version of Rome. Foaming at the mouth. Looking for enemies under every rock. Provoking, and stimulating a worship of personal gratification through "private ownership" provided it is under enslaving interest rate propulsives.
I am always amazed ... ( 7 months ago by distressed7)
I am always amazed at conshits when the banks foreclose on one of their hustles. Believe me, I am no stranger to loss mitigation banking, collection services to the great promoters of free enterprise. All these guys are a big happy family until balloon payment time. The first thing each one runs to is their attorneys and the government. They are suddenly involved in their rights as an "owner". Dude. There are fewer people truly owning anything since Reaganschmeitzer. Bigboys have your note.
Nazis had a waiting ... ( 7 months ago by distressed7)
Nazis had a waiting fawning paying audience after WWII. Wonderful healthy corporatisms like SIEMENS, IBM, BellLABS, etc. even the CIA, lined up like farmboys at the train depot whorehouse as the Reinhard Gehlens were paraded out like hookers to bid on, no matter what they did previous to the Project Paperclip charade that circumvented the Nuremberg damage control trials. Yes, and these same people were there to the last supporting our return to the "free market" as they gasped their death rattle
No it's not you ... ( 6 months ago by rayban5016)
No it's not you frekin homo. You are FREE to be as rich or as poor as you want in America. But if you make it a social state, where everthing is equal, it is immposible for everyone to be rich and is very easy for everyone to be poor. Life isn't fair and if you try and make it, it screws everyone.
distressed7, do you ... ( 6 months ago by rayban5016)
distressed7, do you still live with your mom and right your propoganda bullshit in her basement or do you do it from a shed somewhere in Montana? You typed 4 posts and said jackshit. Here I'll make it simple; the US is the freeist country on earth, we are capiltists. Life in general is great for the majority. Show me a Communist or Socilist country where the people are happy... Didn't think so. So why don't you go take your "factory work and trade union" and go fuck yourself!
have u travelled ... ( 6 months ago by dexterriley)
have u travelled outside of your borders? how do u define happy? Canada has Socialist values like Universal Healthcare..what exactly can u Enjoy in America that Canadians Can't? heck U guys aren't even allowed to watch movies on TV without teh censors butchering the language ..travel rayban get out and travel.
So because "life ... ( 5 months ago by bapyou)
So because "life isn't fair" we should let the rich be rich and the poor be poor forever?
Things have never been so unequal in the U. S as they are at present. But YOU, of course, YOU, are going to be one of the rich ones, aren't you? (I guarantee you are not one of the rich ones now; you've just swallowed the bullshit hook line and sinker.) The U.S. at present is close in unequal dist
ribution of wealth as France was during the time of Louis XVI in. Those conditions led to revolution, son.
It depends on what ... ( 5 months ago by rayban5016)
It depends on what you mean by rich. I am a high school graduate, with no college, 34 old years with a wife and 2 kids and own my own home. I have a good job and am not worried about my next bill. Not because I make $1,000,000 a year but because I am smart with my choices. I haven't swallowed anything except my love for the United States. So you go ahead and believe how bad life is in the US and continue to be miserable. I richness lies in the American dream. Nice French reference asshole!
I don't have to ... ( 5 months ago by bapyou)
I don't have to BELIEVE life is bad in the United States, I KNOW it is bad for a good many people.
Go and look in the mirror, that is all that you're good at. "I'm OK, so why is everybody complaining?" That's your mentality. Your compassion for your fellow citizens goes as far as the end of your nose. Oh, and, love the "frekin homo" reference in your first comment here. Check out the Ran
dy Newman song called "My Life is Good" here on YouTube. He wrote that song just for you.
You don't know me ... ( 5 months ago by rayban5016)
You don't know me so your total ignorant statements about who you think I am proves to me that you are not only a flaming liberbal, but also a dumbass.
I didn't say life was grand for everyone, just liberals. Who else would complain when unemployment has been at or below 5% for 6 years? Try coming to Michigan where the state is totaly run by Democrates and see that our rate has been at or above 7% for 5 years. You want a socilist US? Look at Mich
igan cause that is what your gonna get.
And the Randy ... ( 5 months ago by rayban5016)
And the Randy Newman song was a total was of 3:33 seconds of my real life. He should stick to the Toy Story movies.

It's not perfect, but hey you can be a winer or a doer. My family and I like to do things and not dwell on how poor we are. We try to make our lifes better. How about you. Your life any good?
I disagree with ... ( 4 months ago by stephentyler1)
I disagree with some of the details of Mailer's analyses of American and global politics, but I've always respected his intellectual courage and vigour. He died the proverbial prophet unhonoured in his own country, but -thanks in part to clips like this on the internet- his books, the best of which I think are among the best in American literature, will be read by a new generation of readers, who will be more likely (it's the way with prophets) to appreciate them.
