he said that there ... ( 3 months ago by LordBicen)
he said that there wouldnt be time to find an axe to grind or make social commentary on things in the twilight zone, but you know what, i give the man an a for effort, because many of the twilight zone eps were just that. a way of looking at things from a new perspective. The man beat the sensors at their own damned game. Kudos to Rod for his enigmatic genius.

Hey! That can't be the real Rod Serling! When he talks about eskimo costumes - he's SMILING! haha ;) I thought that was pretty cool. I wonder how he laughs. I'd love to see him laughing his ass off! :P

I've been watching the original Twilight Zone episodes and many of the themes Serling makes comment on still exist today - poker machine addicttion, childhood obsession, weaknesses of the human spirit and particularly the theme of hating the time one was born in and wanting escape. Listening to this i/v I think he secretly wanted to escape to another time - quite possibly the past. The man is still a genius. If he existed today TV execs would probably fire him!

smoking is bad for you. It messes up your looks.I work with a girl who's 24 and already has fine lines from smoking. Plus I'm sure there was alot more chemicals in the environment back then. Lead and asbestos and stuff.

It was publicity for the tobacco companies. They associated this cool attitude with smoking and they used all sorts of ppl to carry the message - actors, tv presenters, they even convinced doctors to recommend it. There are some old commercials on Youtube.

The tobacco companies gave cigarettes to the soldiers during world war II, which resulted in most that smoked them becoming addicted to tobacco. A much higher percentage of men smoked in the first decades following than do today. The troops in the field got free cigarettes along with their rations. Most of the US cigarette production went overseas to our soldiers.
