Stances and defence looks faulty? Check out Lyoto Machida (13-0-0). He uses typical Shotokan low stances, point-sparring defensive movement and effective counter punching.

Don't be fooled by the way the stances look, they are very nimble on their feet. One black belt I faught pounced forward so fast I barely had time to react.
And you're right, you probably won't notice the intricacy of their techniques if you haven't studied Shotokan yourself.

i've been looking at some wado-ryu practioners and i like, there stances is similar to shotokan. i would like to try it and see if like, and by reading the discription of wado-ryu it was made infusing shotokan, goju-ryu, and jujistu.

shotokan was some sweet training. Tanaka was hell to train with. six foot tall jap and all solid muscle. He looked right tru me. I seen Wadu Ryu also one day, that was terrific! Gojo Ryu has some nice breathing tech. I just love to watch the quickness of the two contestants.
