I never get tired ... ( 4 months ago by profgv)
I never get tired of listening to her. She had a beautiful and even voice in all registers and secure. Her live performances show her as tireless. Even as late as the Furtwangler Ring. What sets her apart from Nilsson is the warmth Flagstad had. But both sopranos had reserve to give away. My favorite is Flagstad's act 2 Parsifal.

THIS MAY BE A REPEAT. IF SO, APOLOGIES. I saw Nilsson perform this live and there is no comparison. Her top was far superior, and I prefer her attacks from above rather than sliding into them as Flagstad does. Nilsson's way of doing that ws just simply unbelievable. Flagstad is off key!
This is hard to say ... ( 3 months ago by paxpeter)
This is hard to say, it sounds distorted at that point which could be recording equipment, interpretation (after all, it is a rallying cry) or she simply could be flat.
She is lipsynching and they likely used a performance recording since I think a studio recording wouldn't have the same sound distortions elsewhere. Still, she has quite a colorful voice that is perfect for this piece and her facial expressions (and the set!) are great. Can you imagine this in a
movie today?! :)
I cant say who has ... ( 3 months ago by Heraopera)
I cant say who has been better Flagstadt or Nilsson because the voices are different! Nilsson is more positioned at her top register and Flagstadt is more meety, will say, she sung with a darker natural technique! But it is clear that Flagstadt have sometimes not the tune for the high notes/lost the pitch and attack! And Nilsson has been to metallic! .But I now, that the biggest fan of Flagstadt has been La Nilsson! Still together in heaven?

Though singers ... ( 2 months ago by BDSCalgary)
Though singers today sing the octave jumps as if they are not connected notes, Wagner actually wrote a very deliberate portamento to be sung and the top notes very cut. Flagstad is singing it like Wagner wrote, even though we never hear it sung that way today. The upper C natural may be off, as it was not an easy note for her by this time. She would not sing the high C at the end of the Gotterdammerung prologue. Her B naturals are dead on pitch.

I never knew that beacuse of her husbands business dealings with the nazi's, and her remaining in Norway in the nazi period, she was blacklisted a time....even Toscanini refused her and chose Helen Traubel. It is on wikipedia.

Not at all, I fully agree that Nilsson is far better as Bruhhilda. Her top is far superior and there are nuances(colors) in her singing that are strictly Nilsson, sounds that must be what Plato had in mind when he talked about "perfect intelligible ideas" of which all earthly entities are but mere copies. Also Nillson was the more accomplised singer because she also was the definitive Elektra, Salome, Dyer's Wife, Turandot,Minnie, and yes Tosca.
thx a lot ... ( 2 days ago by cyberwolf100)
thx a lot mentioning Gertrude Grob-Prandl! she should always be remembered as one of the greatest dramatic sopranos of the last century (Br
ünnhilde/Isolde/Elektra/Turandot). the few vocal documents that exist are a proof that she was at least as good as Varnay or Nilsson who were born around the same time and who had just more luck! life is so cruel ...
