Why did everyone ... ( 2 months ago by fleuurdw)
Why did everyone put negative points on my comment? I'm sorry, I was under the impression that mezzos were the most common type of feminine voice as it takes years and years to reach all the notes a soprano can, and guys, mezzo is short for mezzo-soprano so you're just a little lower than a soprano. Most girls without musical training would not be able to reach soprano notes. I have *temporarily* categorised myself as a mezzo as my teacher and my aunt, both professionals, said I probably was.

Wow - this is definately much different than Iva Bittova's version.
I love it.
I can understand ... ( 2 months ago by Grandtenore)
I can understand why many find this devoid of emotion or boring. I think we may be used to a slightly "romanticized" rendering of this...which I myself happen to LOVE lol (e.g. Jessye and Leontyne). However, this is Baroque music and if we adjust our periodic sensibilities, I think we find that this is just as moving and sensitive.
I am a ... ( 2 months ago by woeistree)
I am a mezzo-soprano because the colour of my voice is a lot richer and heavier than a soprano voice, and unless that changes I will still be a mezzo, regardless of my range. So it's not just the notes you can hit that determine your voice type you see? :)

Ah dammit... Last year's IB music had Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and we get stuck with this dying cat.

Well, I don't think Dido's Lament is "too big" for Emma Kirkby's voice. Anyone would think she was trying to sing Wagner! And it sure is lovely not to hear the wobbly vibrato so common among today's singers. Emma must be nearly sixty now; why aren't more singers following her lead?
David Vickers puts ... ( 1 month ago by laraineannebarker)
David Vickers puts it perfectly: "Those enamoured of opulent voices may wonder why Emma Kirkby is the undisputed first lady of early music, but Dacapos 1996 anthology of Buxtehudes music for solo voice and instruments (reissued by Naxos) captures much of what makes her so special: she has acute awareness of dance forms in her delivery of rhythms (even in slower music), a crystal-clear tone, superb agility in quick passages, and a marvellous sense of rhetorical communication." 'nuf said!

Thank you for putting it here. I didn't mind only the voice line showing. I can't read more than one line of music at once anyway. Er, strictly speaking I can't even do that. :-)

I think this piece benefits from a much lighter touch than later opera. Frankly, it's a breath of fresh air to understand the words, hear only minimal vibrato, and feel like Dido herself is not an obese valkyrie.
