Regarding kipping: ... ( 1 month ago by DanielMazanec)
Regarding kipping: I haven't been in the military, but I have read that in military pt tests, kipping is not allowed. All pull ups are to be from a dead hang.
Not exactly. If ... ( 1 month ago by ninjanerd8)
Not exactly. If you can kip 50 you probably can't dead hang 50. The point people like him are trying to make is that kipping lessens the burden on the upper body.
I can dead hand ... ( 1 month ago by khalsasikh)
I can dead hand pull-ups about 22 reps, and I weight 210 pounds...I mean very strict...maybe 25 on a very good day. I can't figure out the kip at all. I've tried, and I just wind up wasting energy and get tired. Bottom line, if you learn the kip, it will develop other areas of your body and will lead to more overall fitness.

Absolutely right. ... ( 3 weeks ago by DanielMazanec)
Absolutely right. I've "caught" myself kipping a time or two, simply because it's easier to do than standard pull ups - the body, if your not paying attention, will suddenly begin to do them. So you have to force yourself to pay attention - which is another good thing about standard pull ups: You have to concentrate in order to do them properly. Develops your brain, too.
Kipping requires a certain amount of coordination, swinging and such, but don't ever call them a Pull Up.
That's probably ... ( 2 weeks ago by persistentmemory)
That's probably because the military is interested in raw upper body strength in the pt tests rather than how well you can execute the full body movement. The obvious is that kipping makes the movement easier on the upper body, but I'm told it's supposed to teach you explosive hip recruitment and whatnot, which is an ideal skill for when you start doing 50 cleans for time, for example. Same with cheat curls.

Pardon my ignorance. What is a "clean?"

try this: with a 20min timer, do as many pull-ups as you can, any way you can.
this worked for me, at around 50-60, something just clicked, and i got it. try to focus on "popping" your hips, its all about the hips.

type "power clean" or "hang clean" into the search bar.

its done as a progression to doing muscle-ups. The thought being that once you get to the level of doing muscle-ups, you really dont need to do pull-ups any more.
I'd bet money that someone who doesnt even have a basic understanding (even from a rudementary standpoint) of kipping, would have an extremely difficult time doing a bar muscle up.

its much better to just do a static pull up than flick yourself up woth your legs. takes the piont out of doing an arm pull up. Look at one arm pull ups

Before I started kipping I could do 10 dead hang pull-ups. After months of kipping without doing ANY dead hang pull-ups, I can now do 25-30 dead hangs. Kipping works more muscles, which produces a stronger hormonal response. End of story.

Since when is cheating useful? I know that it is when you are approaching the last possible reps, but before that? You need additional weight with dead hangs anyway, so why take the weight away and cheat?
The kipping pull up ... ( 1 day ago by Butchbrock)
The kipping pull up is not designed for muscle development - it was designed for upper body endurance conditioning and explosive power. Think of squats with strict form then think of box jumps. Both have their purpose, but niether was designed to accomplish what the other meant for.

I'll make one correction to my previous post: The kipping pull up was not designed for developing huge muscles.

i dunno...this just sorta seems like cheating. i couldnt do this and claim i could do that number of pullups and feel right...all it is, is swinging to get up...just doesnt seem right
At the end of the ... ( 16 hours ago by Butchbrock)
At the end of the day, these movements are designed for to develop functionality. If you were pulling yourself up over something, you wouldn't just rely the muscles in your arms and back. You would do whatever it took to get over that point. If anyone thinks this is easy, I challenge you to perform this movement for five minutes non-stop. It's all about cardio.
