I wonder what happened to the lead singer Josephmary.
Array ( 10 months ago by chinamike1999)
hey ya all
the drummer (Jan) went onwards to China Drum late 90-ies (video's on YouTube: fiction of life and somewhere else...compulsion was good, china drum was greater...and yes, both never got the credit they deserved
Saw them at CBGBs ... ( 9 months ago by ironrope)
Saw them at CBGBs in '93 or '94. There were probably 20 people there but they played as if there were 2,000. Great show.

So he replaced Adam on drums when he went to vocals then? Shocking. I was a fan of both bands but didn't know that!!!
Array ( 8 months ago by chinamike1999)
Clockwolf,
Adam had always sung in China Drum, but beside playing drums. With the release of Self Made Maniac (which Adam still played drums on), Jan was added. The whole tour featured Jan on drums. On the third and last album, released in 2000, where China Drum became The Drum (cd is called Diskin) Jan actually also played drums on the record.
Thanks for that. I ... ( 8 months ago by clockwolf)
Thanks for that. I have Diskin, but never looked too closely at the cover to be honest. Weird, I saw Compulsion 5 times at least and China Drum 10 but never made the connection. That's cider for you I suppose. :-)

hey clockwolf,
so you didn't think that Diskin sounds different from the other China Drum albums...? (that must be some serious cider ;o)...)several songs on Diskin would have been on the next Compulsion album if we hadn't been dropped......

Man that's so cool. I saw them here in Florence, they opened for Levellers and ended up liking them better than the main act :) I have played their songs on my guitar millions of times, especially Mall Monarchy, which I still love. Tell him they meant a lot to me in spite of them being basically unknown in Italy :)

How about posting guitar tab somewhere? I would love to play this song. Loved it since the 90's when I saw them on MTV's 120 minutes.

Brilliant!! So glad to see this. Lucky to have seen them 4 times - best one was when Shed 7 supported them at Joiners Arms in Southampton - absolute chaos. COME BACK PLEASE!!

This is excellent - I was there, just in front of Garett Lee. I have a couple of photos somewhere that I took on the sturdy old festival disposable camera. None of that camera phone nonesense that we get now.
PS - I would have found this ages ago if you'd spelt Phoenix properly ;-)
I did indeed think ... ( 5 months ago by clockwolf)
I did indeed think Diskin was far and away different from the first 2 China Drum albums mate, but I just thought it was a natural progression. Diskin wasn't a bad album in itself but IMO wasn't a patch on their first 2.

cheers clockwolf. glad you like both bands. now, any of that cider left..?

it was before U2 even became famous so it doesnt really matter much i guess! And I cant say much for them being taller as I wasn't even born at that stage! :P

One of the most under-rated bands ever IMO. I love 'The Future Is Medium'.
