Ignorant? How is that ignorant? Think about it logically, would you rather be in a vehicle that weighs up to 4 tons or in something that very likely weighs less that 5/4 ton when in an accident? Furthermore, would you rather be at an elevated level during the impact, allowing you to go over whatever you're hitting, or at ground-level, exposing you to the full force of the impact? You, my friend, are the ignorant one.

A few more things here. First, notice how the concrete wall, which supposedly weighs 20 tons, slides about a meter. Considering the sheer weight of that wall that's a considerable amount of inertia taken away from that dealt to the car. Secondly, notice the fact that the impact happens at an angle, not entirely head-on. This also re-directs the inertia from the initial impact away from the car and toward the direction in which the car slides thereafter.

I'll keep my 21mpg SUV and not have my legs amputated, thanks. I'd like to see the SmartCar get t-boned by a Ford F-250 with mudders. Bet the results wouldn't be as fantastic for this glorified golf cart.

The protective shell did surprise me in how it held together but this was not a head on collision. The wall banked to the right and so took a hell of a lot of impact off of the collision.

well, maybe the smart is safe by itself. But head on collision with pretty much any vehicle on the road would give the driver of the smart,much less chanses to survive. Its just too light.

ermm... my opinion is.. look at tat smart.. its doest reali hav the front part if compare with most of the others car like sedan.. its hav done very well in tat kind of size...

Actually, most SUVs, although yes, you are up higher and have more mass, still aren't very safe. Actually, stopping all that mass puts much more stress on the frame making it easier for the passenger compartment to be deformed in an impact. Have you seen the previous F-150's crash test? I'd rather be in a smart in almost any collision. Also, look up the head on crash test between a Merc E class and a smart. BTW, I'm from the US. :]

actually, you are quite wrong. ya see, almost every modern sedan uses a uni-body platform, which basically means the front and back part of the frames are made of solid steel, and they are connected by a pan or by weaker forms of linkage in between. the advantage of this is that the car will actually collapse, and ABSORB the force of the crash. problem with this is that at higher speeds, theres nothing really solid to take the impact and, well, survive

also, SUVs and trucks either use box or ladder type frame, which are basically solid beams of steel from front to back. and yes the old F150 didnt have such good crash test ratings. but it didnt have such a strong frame. the new F-150, which has a MUCh stronger frame, has 5-star ratings in front tests. and either way i'd still take the F-150 cuz even if my head does go through the windshield, at least im not under a 3 ton truck :D

I lost control on an ice patch on the interstate and did the same head on crash into a concrete barrier wall... only I was in my FULL SIZE 2004 CHEVY PICKUP and not only did I WALK AWAY without a scratch, the truck was repaired (cosmetic damage only, it was driveable after the wreck).
It's totally ridiculous to think that these "smart" cars are anything but deathtraps.
