wow..i respect my parents but i wouldnt tolerate any violence from them.not then and not now.You have to let kid to choose and be the boss of their selves.which will make them a self-confident man when they grow up and probably dont leave in their parents basement till they are in their 30`s or 40`s.And whipping ass is not the answer ,which i think is very old-fashioned way to handle kids.

i view this the other way..Irish catholic moms are un educated and cant even deal with a kid in a situation like that.Kids dont dis-respect their parents but they want to be heard by their parents.spending some time and talking to your kids is always a plus.please dont misunderstand kids cause they are innocent.
