Telescopic Evolution - Waking Life excerpt

Video Description:
"If we're looking at the highlights of human development, you have to look at the evolution of the organism and then at the development of its interaction with the environment. Evolution of the organism will begin with the evolution of life perceived through the hominid coming to the evolution of mankind. Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man. Now, interestingly, what you're looking at here are three strings: biological, anthropological
— development of the cities — and cultural, which is human expression. Now, what you've seen here is the evolution of populations, not so much the evolution of individuals. And in addition, if you look at the time scales that are involved here — two billion years for life, six million years fo
r the hominid, 100,000 years for mankind as we know it — you're beginning to see the telescoping nature of the evolutionary paradigm. And then when you get to agricultural, when you get to scientific revolution and industrial revolution, you're looking at 10,000 years, 400 years, 150 years. Uou're
seeing a further telescoping of this evolutionary time. What that means is that as we go through the new evolution, it's gonna telescope to the point we should be able to see it manifest itself within our lifetime, within this generation. The new evolution stems from information, and it stems from
two types of information: digital and analog. The digital is artificial intelligence. The analog results from molecular biology, the cloning of the organism. And you knit the two together with neurobiology. Before on the old evolutionary paradigm, one would die and the other would grow and dominate.
But under the new paradigm, they would exist as a mutually supportive, noncompetitive grouping. Okay, independent from the external. And what is interesting here is that evolution now becomes an individually centered process, emanating from the needs and desires of the individual, and not an extern
al process, a passive process where the individual is just at the whim of the collective. So, you produce a neo-human, okay, with a new individuality and a new consciousness. But that's only the beginning of the evolutionary cycle because as the next cycle proceeds, the input is now this new intelli
gence. As intelligence piles on intelligence, as ability piles on ability, the speed changes. Until what? Until we reach a crescendo in a way could be imagined as an enormous instantaneous fulfillment of human, human and neo-human potential. It could be something totally different. It could be the a
mplification of the individual, the multiplication of individual existences. Parallel existences now with the individual no longer restricted by time and space. And the manifestations of this neo-human-type evolution, manifestations could be dramatically counter-intuitive. That's the interesting par
t. The old evolution is cold. It's sterile. It's efficient, okay? And its manifestations of those social adaptations. We're talking about parasitism, dominance, morality, okay? Uh, war, predation, these would be subject to de-emphasis. These will be subject to de-evolution. The new evolutionary para
digm will give us the human traits of truth, of loyalty, of justice, of freedom. These will be the manifestations of the new evolution. And that is what we would hope to see from this. That would be nice."

There are just two ... ( 3 months ago by drag54on)
There are just two problatic points in his idea: Is the human not part of nature? Id like to say man in is a way/form of nature.. The idea of mind is not the fact that it consists of sth, but that sth "emerges" up there in your melon-shaped skull ;))) that consistence is irrelevant but EMERGENCE as process not as steady existence leads to his idea of evolution through interaction isnt EVEN sth that he made clear to himself... ;))

You completely miss the point. He's referring to to the telescopic nature of evolution. The speed at which discovery is happening is growing exponentially which is where this new 'evolutionary' paradigm is created. He's not talking about physical evolution, like apes to humans....nice one.

No, I don't see where in this clip he makes the distinction between natural selection and cultural advancement. He shouldn't use the word evolution if he isn't really talking about it.

I'm starting to read up on praxeology and how society comes to be spontaneously out of man's need to go from a state of dissatisfaction to one of satisfaction. If our technological advancements eventually gives us instant satisfaction for our wants and needs, won't society cease to exist?
Satisfaction ... ( 2 months ago by rossman1rb)
Satisfaction defined one day may fade to dissatisfaction the next, so your theory would seem to still hold true but with gratification being delivered on an ever faster time scale. Right up to, but not including, instantaneously. (IMO)
Thanks! Right now, ... ( 2 months ago by Fabyfakid)
Thanks! Right now, the whole science of economics is based on the fact that there we have unlimited needs/wants and limited resources ( the most important of them all being time). So what Dr. Healy explains is very intriguing, and very relevant, to our future as a society and as a species.

It doesn't? of course it does. (allotropic speciation). there's a ton of literature on the evolutionary basis for ethics and what we refer to as "altruism". I think your confusing philosophical egotism with my point. (read hauser, de waal, or richard joyce). Where did yo get this evolution is only in individuals business? can I get references?

sorry, that was "psychological egoism", not philosophical egoism.

There is no such thing as "allotropic speciation". Did you mean allopatric? That is geographic speciation due to populations being physically isolated. That doesn't support your argument. I've changed my position. I believe that group selection does exist. I am still not buying his notion of telescopic evolution though.

The "neo human" idea i think is a bit of a hit n hope rather than a prediction. Eg truth in evolution is always intertwined with successful deception.
that was the ... ( 2 months ago by Traderjoe56)
that was the original argument. physically isolated groups exist. some groups have more individuals that can postpone immediate gains for the greater good ("altruism")because these groups have stronger group cohesion, they survive, and dominate those with less cohesion. but glad you see this. telescopic evolution is an entirely different argument. But you don't need to look far to find examples. Books for example have evolved telescopically. clay tablets, to scrolls, to roman codex, etc.

This movie is fantastic! A friend recommended it and I was hooked on it from the first moment. Is what we see real or is it not? Are we in a waking dream?
we rule ourself, ... ( 1 month ago by bexigah)
we rule ourself, because to be conscient is dream. Lives or not,we ever dream, and,is not a colective dream, the conscence is multiplicated,by a numbers of information we have. We rurn a new one conscient, but the ''old you'', still ever conscient.
if i divide 1 by 3, I create one conscience.
see; 1/3 = 0,999. we can rapair thisPeriodic dizimal calling 0,999 x 3 = 1 . it proves the conscience multiplication by individual division. becouse 0,999 is not identical from it's precursores, 1 e 3.

I think there are some flaws with considering the development of human civilisation as a kind of progression. Don't get me wrong; I myself view it in those terms, but there are some break-out points that seem anomalous given the rest of the smooth development - like Northern Indian civilisations having sewage systems centuries before the Greeks/Romans...and then you have a figure like Da Vinci who invents submarines, helicopters and WMD during the Renaissance. Mad world, eh?

ahh but thats how evolution happens. an evolutionary event doesnt happen at once traits can happen at the same time in diffrent areas. playtupus is a good example. it can happen anywhere, its almost like collective conciousness. and its telescopic starts slow moves faster then boom. thats the crescendo he is talking about. 46 and 2 we may see it who knows. see the duality of the universe as a singularity and the interconnections between all things. its somewhat poetic.

Hm...given the trends in its evolution, do you have any kind of conception as to what entity the current form of "books" (i.e. repositories of the written word) might evolve in to eventually? Or might such a projection/prediction be impossible?
really you have to ... ( 1 week ago by pshaw951)
really you have to realize the extent to which language can be taken. and that is only so far because language is an inefficient way of communicating the abstract. we use language to communicate worldly objective things. so using this information we can deduce that inventions, evolution, technology are all right in front of us and it has been forever and its up to the LIMITLESS creativity and imagination of the human spirit to drive our species forward.
yes and like in the ... ( 1 week ago by pshaw951)
yes and like in the excerpt fear and laziness he talks about greeks being just as developed as we are today. true on a social level, a limited understanding with how to deal with other fellow humans. but the fact is we shouldnt have to deal with one another, it should be cooperate to produce to greatest possible outcomes to generate a faster means to this new evolutionary cycle... the technological/information evolution.
I suppose that's ... ( 1 week ago by lordhaku)
I suppose that's the real bugger of it really, isn't it? Creativity and imagination are unlimited, but we exist in a universe which imposes some very strict limits on us - and in order to achieve the first shift towards something like a limitless universe, we have to understand our own limitlessness.
i believe that this ... ( 4 days ago by pshaw951)
i believe that this new written text would cut right through social formality and get to the truth and new ideas. It would be perpetuation of the human race. Socialism would be dead. Although, their might still be fictional material to keep a social atmosphere, but how far into evolution are we really looking.
