Yeah that sucks. But the Iraqi Army have fought and defeated Sadr's Mahdi Army but Sadr still has a lot of influence. Women's rights were better under Saddam Hussein but his rule was enforced by state terror and genocide against his own people. Naturally now he is gone, Islamic extremists and tribal politicians reacted against women. But democracy has taken root and women have the right to vote and women politicians are in office and Sadr will face stiff opposition.
Iraq has better chance now.

Well said! I keep finding instances where people are talking about bringing Democracy to Iraq and how it's so important... I'm beside myself with confusion because I didn't realize that so many Americans have relatives and such a fervent passion about a desert country in the Middle East. It makes no sense... unless, it's just a topic that is infused with their chosen ideology and thus they will support it. Honestly, what is the root purpose for Democracy in Iraq? Is it the Persian Gulf???

American power. A democracy in Iraq will naturally seek American support and assistance. An autocratic government in Iraq would be more likely to seek the support of an autocratic China or Russia cutting the US out of the show.

McCain was an idiot to say Obama was wrong on Iraq. Everything Obama said about the war: not giving the president the sole power for a preemptive invasion, and the post planing was proven correct where McCain was way off the mark saying we'd be greeted as liberators.
