Cutting with Chinese Jian (straightsword)

Uploaded by: Alveprins
Video Description:
I have noticed there are several japanese sword cutting videos on this webpage.. Well, I'm a swordsmith apprentice under a quite famous Chinese swordsmith, and I enjoy cutting stuff up as much as anyone. I am an amateur however.. :)
Anyway, there's alot of hype going around saying that the Japanese katana is super-sharp, and the best sword in the world and bs like that. The japananese got their Katana model from the Chinese during the Tang Dynasty, and learned to forge swords from the chinese. However, I'd like to remove some of the bad reputation modern Chinese wushu has given the Chinese sword, and get the true Chinese sword out of the shadows.
The sword in the video is a double edged jian, Qing Dynasty reproduction in 3-layer lamination with 4000 layers of folded steel. It is razor sharp, and has a price-tag of around 1000USD. This is a real sword, and not one of those flappy wushu-toys used for dancing around. Enjoy... Best regards, K

From the texts I read, Damascus steel was invented in India and passed to Middle East and when Middle Easterners conquered Spain they brought that technology with them. That being said, the Imperial swords from Tang Dynasty were often forged by 4800 layers of folding steel. The best Imperial sword in Japan was forged by 4000 layers of folding steel. Therefore I think the Chinese and Japanese had the most advanced swords.

I assume that you are referring to "wootz", a crucible steel which originated in the middle east. Yes, it considered by many to be the best type of steel ever created, but today that art is lost. There are still people who make so called "techno wootz", but there is a significant difference from the old wootz. I've seen antique Arab wootz blades myself, and they are very impressive. But cutting through rock, I think both of us know is just hype. ;)

In that case, I would like to have a look at these "worlds best swords". Would you happen to have a link to some of the works from Toledo manufactured swords online, with stats and such? My experience is that there is no "best sword", but allot of very good swords from different cultures.

That is most likely hype. It doesn't matter how sharp it is, a bloody razor is sharper than swords, what mattters is its durabiblity and usefulness in combat.

More likely a pike or halbard. They're longer and not as flexible as the spear. The jian required much more skill. It was hard to master. The Dao on the other hand was simple to use, ideal for teaching to soldiers, but still hard to master.

China has a huge history, and many amazing accomplishments. During the Wars of Unification in the Qin Dynasty, the Qin King had an army of 500,000. For comparison, the Romans fought Carthage with 7,000, Alexander the Great only had 40,000 for his conquest, and Napolean had at most 100,000, yet he is overshadowed by them. Besides it's amazing population, many modern tech was invented millenia ago. With the terracotta soldiers, they found crossbows with the soldiers lined up in fire and reload

positions. More amazing was that the bronze was all rust free. That was because master metalworkers found ways of infusing chrome to bronze before it was "invented" in 1933. The arrowheads were shaped in a way to further its range, showing that Qin makers understood aerodynamics. Also, there's proof that the weapons were mass produced and standardized 2000 years before the Model T. I wouldn't be surprised if the Qin would be able to stave of the Romans (if they ever fought).

Yeah, the security is tightened everywhere these days. Just look at the UK and the sword-ban. During the Olympics we couldnt even ship glass or porcelain inside the country. My friend who was moving from Beijing to Guangzhou couldnt even ship his pants, because the pants had a metal zipper and button.. Dangerous stuff huh?

and also, during the warring states or the spring and autumns, the blast furnase is invented, which allowed the chinese to forge and mass produce weapons and equipments which could be to a wide spectrum and degree of hardness. bronze weapons unearthed are still stong.
btw, the hardness of Melted and meaded bronze weapons using the blast furnace depends on their cooling period
