Elliot Smith once said that he doesn't know why people say his songs are sad, because they make him happy. I think that viewing a person through their songwriting is tricky. they're not always telling their own story, so even if Conor talks about being happy, it doesn't mean he is. And I don't think anyone saw Elliot's death coming, because even if he writes sad songs, it would take a complete cynic to predict his death just becuase his songs are sad.
