Well since I've been learning ancient greek history since I was 7, i'm gonna enlighten you in this one. In Thermopylae only the persian division sended by Xerxes 80.000 Persians and allies versus 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians deciding to stand equal with the Spartans and sacrifice. Answering to your next comment, the expeditionary persian force invading Greek-City-States territory was a total of 2.5 mil souls including the reserves, the slaves, etc.

Nobody knows for certain. you'd need to go back in time to be certain of the story. I believe the story was written by a greek historian. Therefore they more than likely exaggerated the persian numbers.
A persian recount would have been completely different, more than likely they would say that the greeks had an absolutely massive force of about the same numbers.

So it doesn't matter how much research you do. You would have to go back in time to know the truth.

Why were the Spartans fighting peasants? I have played that game lots, I would say in real life it would not be possible but I would also say if they had a box formation and about 400 more than yeah it would happen, or if they were Romans doing that jagged toothed wall of people I have seen that reenacted and wow effective none the less I'm rambling good video wish I could find my copy of Rome total war.

You shouldn't make such comments about a subject it's obvious you have no idea about, (no offence meant really.) First of all we'r not talking about a certain story. This is the history of one of the few ancient nations deciding not to bow before the massive power of the Persian Empire and to block their way to bringing Europe to it's knees, The numbers written by ancient historians such as Herodotus of course exaggerated, but these are the results of scientific evidence and research.

They weren't deployed at the same time. It was a three day battle. Also, the most widely accepted Persian troop number at the battle was 30,000.

I'm assuming you learned about the history of Greece in school as a child. In this battle- 80,000 persians according to ancient sources, but modern evidence suggests 200,000 persian soldiers against a total of up to 6,400 Greeks. Over 3,800 chose to withdraw on the last day of the battle, after it was learned that the Phocians had retreated from the mountain path. The remaining Greeks essentially covered the retreat until they were surrounded and killed by arrows. Surrenderers were not accepted.

No shit, not every persian faught at once u know, xerxes wouldnt send a million troops into one battle, at thermopolaye there was stil about a million persians nowere near the battle.

Well I appreciate your offer of scientific evidence. Even tho i could disagree in a couple of details posted here i wont, just to tell you that i wanted to focus more on the moral aspect of the Greco-Persian wars on my comment than on the facts and numbers; which anyone can find in various sites if he is interested.

well that's a load of crap. I aint a historian, but I've read battle reports and read alot about this stuff so I think I know what I'm saying. On the other hand, 1-2 million seems too much, how they hell could they have supplied that kind of force anyway? without modern methods I mean. 200,000 sounds cool + non combatants.

yeah, 200,000 sounds cool. 2 million sounds awesome, but also impossible. there's no way to supply an army that large, without modern methods of course. ever read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield? fantastic book. nearly all of it fiction, but it really gives an idea what happened there a couple millenia ago :D

Oh okay. I just wanted to make it clear that it wasn't just the 300 spartans plus the 700 Thespians. The exact numbers are widely disputed and unkown anyway. But I understand what you were pointing out now, that the 700 Thespians decided to stay with the Spartans instead of withdrawing with the other groups.

This is a graphic example of why the Helots (the slaves of the Spartans) could and did revolt because they severely lacked the training and the equipment to successful fight the Spartan armies that were constantly training and were prepared for war. Even though the Helots vastly outnumbered the Spartans. I would not be surprised if the odds were 10 to 1. This video has nothing to the Persians, and with these odds, the Persians would easily crushed the Spartans in similiar conditions.

That may sound like an exaggeration. So how will it sound to you if i tell you that the Persians had another another 2.5 million soldiers guarding their vast empire from rebbelions. It sounds too much for an empire that existed 2500 years ago but not for the second largest empire ever. (After the British one) This is why Thermopylae, Marathon, Platees are memorised in history for ever. Its the stand of the few against the many, democracy against tyrrany. These men deserve to be remembered.
