yes, it was filmed in japan. Tarkovsky and his crew had to fight through a lot of Soviet red tape to get permission to go there and film.

I think so. That's what I thought when I first saw this incredible sequence. Tarkovsky detested Kubricks's film, for being "cold" and "dehumanizing." So maybe this was a slap in Kubrick's face.

There is hardly any characterisation in 2001, to tell the truth, so to say it's dehumanising is fair enough, IMO.

"2001" is not dehumanising. And it's a very emotional film.
Either way, "2001" and "Solyaris" are both masterpieces. And they have stood the test of time. :)

I don't think so. Even if he thought so, he wouldn't devote a portion of his film to it. I think its rather to build-up for a contrast to the next seen in which there is some sort of marsh remote from any civilization. To show, perhaps, a gap that exists between us, the nature and the unknown.

shklovsky's and brecht's theories of estrangement should not be confused. in shkl's case, "sensation of things as they are perceived" (and all that wordsworthianism) is rather accurate, while brecht seeks analytical response, his objective being to raise social and linguistic awareness, not to enthrall the perceiver

Looks like something Chris Marker would've done for Sans Soleil. Except the parts with the father and daughter.

i hope anyone watching this has already seen it in its proper context in the film... i was deeply 'shaken' by it the first time i saw it... totally unexpected. i felt like i was having a nightmare by the end of it, totally lost sense of time!

I also don't think Andrei would do anything for the worse or the best of any individual. All he did, he did for us all. Thanks, Tarkovsky! But yes, I think 2001 was dehumanizing and cold. Haven't enjoyed the movie at all; unlike every Tarkovsky picture, specially Stalker.

Wow, at gasoline close or over $4 gallon, they would've spent a fortune if they filmed this scene today!!!!

..but on the other hand, perhaps gasoline could be so cheap, and car engines so efficient, in the Solaris future, that gasoline is .455 cents a gallon and the mileage of the cars in this video clip are 100 miles to the gallon? I believe this is called "science fiction"???!!!

In what way is this clip "awe inspiring" to you? I'm curious.
A great scene ... ( 3 months ago by fearofjazz)
A great scene indeed but to leave out what he cuts to at the end is to leave out the most important part, in my opinion. Tarkovsky then cuts to a huge tree in a forest which is dwarfing a human...the scene is one of complete beauty and serenity...

I think this scene is really beautiful and thought out, i mean a lot of people in the commercial world would think this is a load of shit, but i loved it. The whole film of Solaris was riveting and a pure masterpiece, some people will like it, some will hate it, i loved it.
