How about this...Derek and Duane are two of the greatest guitar players of all time! Duane and Derek both have their own sound. I just got done w/ the book Skydog and it was one of the best reads of my life. I have such a respect for Duane and the Allman Brothers. Duane died wayyyyy too early and there is no telling what he could have done had he lived longer. Derek has the opportunity to show us what Duane could not through a longer life...that is how I look at it.

duane is probably THE best slide guitarist ever. there are a few other guitarists like rory gallagher who could play slide. derek trucks is the best slide player now i think.
hes WAY better than mayer even if they both are 2 different styles of playing.

Mayer grooves his own way.. In terms of musicianship, I would probably swing towards trucks, but Mayer can do a lot and is quite versatile and a really crafty songwriter. although a lot of his old pop is frowned upon and rightly so.

John Mayer definitely has the songwriting down,,, his guitar playing is not exactly D. Trucks, but its a matter of preference i suppose. D.Allman was amazing NO doubt. but Trucks is the new school version, he holds down the fort so to speak damn well.

As for the Mayer comments. John Mayer is a talented guy, technically a very, very good guitarists--maybe even great. But NOT original. He plays like Stevie Rayvon. And he writes good, albeit, cheesey and sometimes DMB wannabe pop songs. I agree with the others, Derek is soooo original. And he has such a delicate, subtle touch. An old soul. Soooo awesome... Mayer vs. Trucks? No comparison...And by the way, Mayer even knows that...

is that an SG 61 reissue right???i own a SG standard in heritage cherry too...but i think the sustain isnt only a matter of what guitar u play(though gibson are the best for it..) in a good amp every guitar gain a good sustain....and stratocasters can do that i believe

Derek is so young and raw right now. He has so much growing to do, yet he is still one of the top guitar players in the world. When it is all said and done
he has lived his life, he will be considered one of the best of all time IMO.

I think your opinion is right. I have said before that with a slide this young man cannot be touched. He is ranked (I believe by Guitar player magazine) as #81 in the entire world which I believe is short changing him. He has an understanding of the instrument that is posessed by few. His attitude is that of a humble young man and he has great respect for those who came before him. One day his name will be mentioned among the greats but he still has so far to go.

Dreams is my favorite Allman's tune. To understand about Duane and why people are so passionate about his playing, a good thing would be to directly compare Derek's playing here with Duane's playing on the original recording on the Allman's first album. If you listen carefully, you can hear why Derek deserves his high reputation, but you will also hear why Duane's playing is considered untouchable by many. There is just something about Duane's glides... they're really "out there".

Landreth's innovative approach to technique is cool (especially the right hand), but the material he plays isn't of this caliber, IMHO.

john mayer is my favorite guitarist but derek trucks is so much better i love his playing so much especially the slide

but Derek uses a 65' super reverb which is a really clean amp, he gets his "overdriven" sound from his speakers which are pyle drivers, they are made for car stereos so they break up very easy at low volumes and when you crank the amp it sounds like you're using a tube overdrive pedal
