This movie is totally one-sided; the mini-landmines coloured like children's toys were terrible, but so was the hideous treatment meted out to captured Russian soldiers. There is virtually no attempt to understand the conflict from the Soviet side. That said, Leonid Brezhnev was a fool for invading; he should have read Winston Churchill's memoirs. We couldn't make the Pashtuns into peaceful colonials, the USSR couldn't make them into good communists, and I doubt NATO will make them democrats.

I can't believe the West still clings to their myth about mines that look like toys. Only the American right could think of something so sick. The only time one has ever been caught on film is Rambo III. What did impress me about this film though, was that is showed that the USA didn't give a damn about Afghanistan's future. They just wanted to look good politically. Look at the endless hell the "freedom fighters" unleashed in Afghanistan which has yet to end.

Why do I get the impression that this film will give people the idea that the US only started funding Afghan terrorists AFTER the Soviet invasion? Typical Hollywood revisionism it appears. They were funding terrorists prior to the Soviet invasion, because the nation had an independant reformist government. The people the US was supporting were burning the faces off women with acid. It was US intervention that caused the Soviet invasion, resulting in the deaths of over a million people.

You're point. I'd rather my Government not spend billions without having a agenda that benefits the people who gave them that money. I'd be kinda pissed if they didn't. I wish they would stop wasting time and money in Africa actually. Unless they can find a way to make Africa self significant.

Damn right the definition changed. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan to quell what they saw as a renegade "Client" State. Their goal was to keep Afghanistan loyal to the USSR. The United States invaded Afghanistan to REMOVE a government that tortured its own people and put many other nations as risk by their actions (the US included) When the Soviets left, they intended to leave a USSR controlled puppet, when we leave they will have an independent government. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.

Have never read anyone complain about American "Interventionism" during WWI OR WWII. No one LIFTED A FINGER to stop Serbia from blowing the s__t out of Kosovo until President Bill Clinton got NATO involved. Apparently, the UN couldn't be bothered to "intervene" in that particular instance of GENOCIDE. What the Europeans don't like to to hear is the truth. With the MASSIVE Logistical support of the United States, DAMN LITTLE gets done. No one else has bothered to keep their militaries up.

No one in the US Military, no sir. No one in the Soviet Military, no sir. No one in the varies branches of the Royal Military, no sir. In fact, they were QUITE HAPPY the war ended. The Soviet Union and the Great Britain were virtually bankrupted by the War and were EAGER to have it over.

My God, do you ever wake up to the real World? I think that you have shown yourself to be EXTREMELY selfish. As long as nothing hurts you, you are quite content to "Let them work it out for themselves". Even if "Working it out" means one side completely killing the other. People like you are EXACTLY who we had to fight against when we tried to stop the genocide in Somalia. And people like you were EXACTLY why President Clinton was ultimately forced to withdraw.
