Leonard Bernstein performs Beethoven's Ode to Joy

Uploaded by: ernestalba
Video Description:
Leonard Bernstein with the Vienna Philharmonic performs Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Notice how dramatic his conducting is; it's pretty funny. Because of Youtube limitations, I split this piece up into 3 sections. This is Part 1/3. I highly recommend sticking around for the choral reprise of the first verse in Part 2/3 and the prestissimo finale in Part 3/3.
Soloists are Gwyneth Jones, Shirley Verrett, Placido Domingo, and Martti Talvela. This first video clip is divided into the following sections: 0:00-3:36 Bernstein's introduction 1:27-2:15 The Ode to Joy played solemnly by Cello and Contrabass 2:15-3:04 A lighter, sweeter variation now including
Viola and Bassoon 3:04-3:51 Larger, more expressive second variation with addition of 1st and 2nd Violins 3:52-4:38 Triumphant and majestic third variation utilizing entire orchestra. Instruments added: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, contrabassoon, cornet, trombone, and timpani 4:39-5:31 Dizzying flight of
passion including the brief introduction of a blithe tune that is almost immediately interrupted by a thunderous cadence 5:33-6:30 The bass introduces the chorus to the audience 6:30-9:17 The Ode to Joy theme is now replayed with the significant inclusion of the chorus singing Schiller's poem. Ge

Oh the Irony,an intelligent person would not be so ignorant as to say such a thing. Music is music it has no bearing on intelligence and the fact that you believe it does simply highlights how ignorant you truly are.

Or maybe how ignorant you truly are. The intellectual complexity of this symphony, like Beethoven's 3rd, 5th and 7th symphony cannot be overlooked. Every true musician agrees on this and the fact that you say there is nothing, shows how you may never truly understand or appreciate this music at it's fullest. Music is a metaphorical language and it can and IS carrying greater intelligence, depth and insight then what words could ever hope to describe. This music would never exist by your mindset

"it's Schiller's lyrics that is talking about peace and unity, not neccessarily Beethoven's music."
What is this symphony about? I am not trying to attack you but did you honestly think over what you just said? By all historic records this symphony ment the world for Beethoven, and it's about universal peace over all things.

plus, I did not deny any of the things you said. I love Beethoven and his music, and I agree that it represents Schillers lyrics quite well. But well, that's my opinion, that Schiller, who is often NOT mentioned when it comes to Ode an die Freude, although it is his original text on which Beethoven based his music, deserves some more credit.

And what I meant is this - to me, without the lyrics, the symphony could symbolize many things. Not neccessarily unity, maybe it could be an ode to flowers, or to love, or whatever.
But I apologize, my comment was mistakable.
I do, however, love Beethoven, and especially this wonderful Symphony.

in another video bernstein himself said "music is never abouth anything. Music just is. Music is just beatiful notes": beethoven thought about freedom and brotherhood and joy and he wanted to communicate this kind of feelings that's why he used the schiller's ode. But when i listen to 9th i have the right to think what i prefer. Maybe my lover's voice or the happiness that i feel when i drink some beers witj friends in a pub...
