Bicycles of the 1970s

Uploaded by: oldroads
Video Description:
Today when you see someone riding a bicycle and they are not decked out in stupidly-tight Lycra you figure they probably lost their driver's license. No-one rides bikes today in street clothes and every bike looks the same.
It wasn't always that way. There was a time when bicycles were ridden by average, non-athletic people and the bikes were used for transportation.

I got my 8 year old daughter a reproduction 1968 Schwinn Grape Stingray mail order off the internet from a place in Ohio for Christmas. Her friends are in awe of the thing. Wish I wasn't too big to ride a 20" bike!
Enjoyed the video.

I just bought a Sears Free Spirit 5 speed at a garage sale for $5.00. The bike is basically unmolested, and rides better than some of the newer bikes.

I'm 31 years old, I have been riding vintage bicycles since I was 8. I seriously ride bicycles, and I ride wearing a T-shirt, and blue-jeans, or jean shorts. I don't own any Spandex at all, yuck, lol. So I'm one avid rider in jeans, anyone else? Great vid, loved the music!!

Wow, this brings back memories of my childhood. Not that I grew up in the 70's or anything, but I had a pink bike with a banana seat that I rode ALL the time. I got stopped by so many people saying that they would buy my bike from me. Needless to say, it got all screwed up from years of use. I don't think I have it anymore.. (and if I do, it's probably under a tarp in the back yard.)

Awesome! But what the #!## is a Huffy bike with a steering wheel? It looks like a death trap! I had a bike like the motocross, but it was yellow, and had a guy with a hat on the gastank and said HOMBRE. Can anyone help with info please? What brand? a pic or site? I cant find anything? Thanks! Great Video.

That Huffy, to my knowledge, which is limited, is the Huffy "The Wheel". Rare bicycles as I understand? The last ones that I saw online were 900-1300 U.S. dollars in nice original condition.

I think the bike with the steering wheel was part of the pre-bmx craze when kids wanted bikes to use in car-driving fantasy. When I was a child (early 80's) the plastic Big Wheel trikes were HUGE and we used to race them with our legs crossed in the seat and people pushing us from behind.

I was 10 in 71. Me and my best buddy, after seeing Easy Rider, hacksawed off forks and pounded the ends one on top of the other. We extended the forks on our stingrays by 3 or 4 lengths. I don't know if anyone else was doing this but it caught on like wildfire in my little world. It was the craze untill Evil Knevil got us jumping ramps.
