At once a political thriller and human drama, THE LIVES OF OTHERS begins in East Berlin in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin Wall and ultimately takes us to 1991, in what is now the reunited Germany. THE LIVES OF OTHERS traces the gradual disillusionment of Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe, best known for his lead roles in Michael Haneke's FUNNY GAMES and as Dr. Mengele in Costa-Gavras' AMEN), a highly skilled officer who works for the Stasi, East Germany's all-powerful secret police. His mission is to spy on a celebrated writer and actress couple, Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck).

Ive read so many great things about this film (Ebert anyone)...but this trailer doesnt look amazing, Im sure it doesnt do it justice...I will get around to watching it regardless of this (IMO) lackluster trailer...for those who have seen it, would you say this trailer does the film justice?

you should definitely watch it.
but it is really a different movie. not full of action. you have to think a lot but if you wait and watch it until the end you will be rewarded. it draws a very realistic picture of the times in the GDR.

i agree, the trailer is disappointing. but you should definitely watch it, it's one of the best political drama of all times, it really depicts what life was like in GDR

DEFINITELY WATCH THIS FILM. The trailer is intentionally deceitful! And I like it that way. I wouldn't want them to give everything away and ruin your experience of watching the movie. I usually hate political drama, but this is so much more. The movie really touched you on the emotional level.

änkt sich nicht nur auf die Zeit von 1914- 1989. Da ist noch viel mehr zu entdecken, aber die Leute sind in ihrer Kurzsichtigkeit nur auf das 20. Jhd. fixiert.

Yes, because the most inappropriate and most disturbing thing students could possible see is- sex. If they are old enough to deal with a subject like the Stasi, they are old enough to deal with a little naked flesh. Oh, one of the main caracters dies in a kind of suicidy way, but of course, it would be much worse if the students would see her having sex and not die.
