I will say that Katie Holme's version actually called for acting, where Maggie Gyllenhaal really only had to look at the ground and be angry for about the seven minutes she had on the screen. Really, Maggie couldn't really pull off looking at the Joker right. They played the part no differently.
People just don't like Katie Holmes.
