Gene was more than a close friend of Rich's, he was Rich's mentor.

I met Buddy in 1938, and Gene in 1932. Gene was one of several drummers Buddy liked when he first started playing jazz. (he had a particular fondness for Chick Webb) Although in later years he and Gene would become great friends, they did not know each other when Buddy first started playing jazz in '38.
Although some think otherwise, Buddy didn't have an actual "mentor" per se. Over the years he absorbed virtually everything he saw and heard---amazing! P.S. Yes, I am very OLD! lol

Thanks for the reply, "Hitman". Yes, both Gene and Buddy were class acts and great artists, even though they were very different in many ways. However, as I have said many times before, I don't rate great performers in terms of speed and "chops" I merely view them as different "flavors"! I miss them both. :)

Yes. we are getting older....Gene 1st met Rich when Rich was playing for Tommy Dorsey if I remember right. And in their later years when they would have ther so called drum battles....very few times would Gene try and upshow Rich. He knew Rich looked up to him,,and it wasnt important to Gene anymore on just speed.Gene was into the beat at the time.

One would think that there would follow an inherited procession of hallmarks, the likes of Chick Webb, "Papa" Jo Jones, Gene Krupa, and 'the' master, Buddy Rich... While there have come many interim great, great drummers, too many to name, like that of Louis Bellson, none in my opinion quite measure up to these prime forerunners of the instrument for what they each gave to the instrument in particular and to music in their unique ways.

What a cool video. Gene was the BEST. So tastefull. he 'played' the drums and never 'banged' the drums unlike 99% of the drummers out there. He made them sing!

Well, Buddy's faster, more technical and plays with a tighter swing, while Gene has more feeling, better showmanship, and plays a looser swing which intern makes him sound tighter with a band! If you really want to break down who was the best, I'd probably have to say it's between Gene Krupa and Chick Webb, no one could build excitement like they could, and make seemingly simple things sound so damn good! Gene could make a quarter note swing if you know what I mean! Really none better!
