From what I've heard, one of the guys either in Minor Threat or one of the band's friends was making posters for a show using a straight-edged ruler. It was to make the posters look clean and neat. MT wrote the song Straight Edge because their lifestyles are clean and neat (hence the term straight edge). They never intended for it to be a movement. They were basically stating how they live. Others took it as a set of rules and turned it into the straight-edge movement we know of today.

Too bad I had to work DJing that night and their last night 1983/09/23 with TF and the BB. Did catch them June 1981 with about 50 people at 9:30. Right before the first single came out and the crowd was just the bands friends.
