I was a volunteer in a flavela in Santa Teresa in Rio (down the road from Prezeres)The Flavela where I worked had no guns or drugs as far as I could see (and they make themselves pretty noticeable). The chilren I was teaching were friendly and kind.
I got mugged in Catete, a fairly nice part of Rio. I would never have got mugged in my flavela because they looked out for me and had my back. Rio is a wonderful city. The Cariocas are extremely welcoming and friendly. Rio, voce tem meu cora
