Seriously. We should look at those 80's fantasy films and just see how completely awesome they were. We can get better puppets and better robotics, but stay the hell away from screenshots and characters saturated in 20 layers of CG effects. I mean, I respect the time and energy put into a lot of today's epics, but... I dunno. It's just kinda sucky these days. You're absolutely right. Part of a movie experience is putting the audience into a story, not a computer screen.

Peter Jackson did actually build huge sets for Gondor, Rohan and the Shire and he also built a lot of miniatures. For Gollum Andy Serkis did actually act it out and then they added the animation on top - not sure Lucas did the same for Jar Jar...

As much as the original films were a part of my childhood, Lucas fucked it up when he went back adding unnecessary shit to the originals. Greedo shoots first! The ewok song at the end of RotJ is EVEN WORSE THAN IT WAS ORIGINALLY! Ooh, Hayden and better explosions!!! And then the attrocious prequels. Now I can't even watch the originals the same way I once could. They're still great films, but they have an unmistakable tarnish on them now. The tarnish of George Lucas' douchebaggedness.

Not really. Yeah, Jackson did use CGI and bluescreen for Lord of the Rings, but not nearly as much as Lucas did for the SW prequels. Jackson put much more effort into it than Lucas put into the prequels.
LOTR wasn't just an excuse for the CGI team to go crazy, and the movies didn't look like video games.

The sad thing is: I'm afraid you're right and this is what WOULD have happened to Tolkien's great novel if G.Lucase had been allowed to "adapt" it for the big screen... Just look what he did to his own movies (the classics) because of sheer greed. Nobody knew Peter Jackson before LOTR but 10 minutes into "The Fellowship" it was clear that he'd blow George Lucas out of the water.
Lucas' new trilogy proves that he's too dumb to direct and too douchebag to realize he's a laughingstock now...

I agree with you. Too bad people focus on what he's done wrong, instead of actually realizing how well he's done. It's always easy to follow the goddamn flock. Nowadays, people have to think, not follow. Orelse our world's dead already. And I think it is. Psh. BTW, the cinematographic adaptation of the LotR SUCKS ASS. ANYONE who's read the books know what I'm talking about !

I was bored by the books. Whether you like the films or not, you can't deny that a hell of a lot of effort was put into creating a believable world and drama.

I actually like the books, but the movies were awesome. I admit the books get mundane at some points. The only part i got a little tired with the books is when the ring was destroyed. I mean it is done, the story should be over, but this happens like a little past the halfway part of the book!! Then we go all the way back to the shire and the hobbits battle Sauraman . I mean this was so unnecessary, thats the only real complaint I had. Then the movies ending could have been shorter.
