is it necessary to ... ( 2 months ago by mainandmizzen)
is it necessary to plan out and rationalize photography and art in general? I think not. I think this guy has a wealth of artistic, creative ability. Why don't 99% of people's snap shots look as good at Gilden's do if he is indeed only snapping away. The answer is that he has a beautiful photographic instinct. He knows intuitively what or who will make a fantastic photograph. Most people don't have that ability.
Yeah that could be. ... ( 2 months ago by royalsteven)
Yeah that could be. He might already feel or see the composition waiting for him. If so, it's a talent.

I agree with how u put it. Like he may just see the picture waiting to happen very quickly without having to think about it.

what a tool. He is documenting, but he is not doing more than that. These are candid shots, with a documentary value. He's not looking to add something to his images, he just flashes ppl he thinks look interesting, wow...

I think candid shots are great but the way this guy goes about it is stupid.
Too agressive with the camera. People don't need to be startled like that walking down the street. I realize its just a camera but when someone drops down point blank like that and shoots you, you have no idea what he is doing. Putting that kind of stress on people sucks.

I enjoy street photograpy but the point of it is to take a picture not create one. His aproach was to aggresive, those weren't real depictions of the street. For instance the elderly lady at the beginning looked so shocked and disturbed after the shot. Now joel meyerowitz blends in with the crowd he uses techniqes that distracts the subject from the camera infront of them. This bloke however doesn't deserve to be a magnum photographer

Yeah well flashing a big light in someone's face is one thing, but then also being grumpy at someone for not taking the right pose is another. No matter how artistic the pictures are.

Gilden is a genius. I admire his work and strive to achieve the results and success that he has.

royalsteven: I disagree. I dont think he is being what you call "grumpy" at all. As a native New Yorker myself, I can tell you this is the norm. If you want to see grumpy, take a ride in the subway. Gildens work is highly criticized by many, but at the end of the day one has to look at what he's accomplished as an artist and photographer. This guy is not just some nut standing on 42nd street with a Rangefinder. Many photographers would give their first born to be a member of Magnum :)

I respect that, it's just my taste. I'm more a fan of abstract art photography not the journalistic style. I would rather join National geographic then magnum X_-

Gee, I guess this is smug street photography. He has no ethics! haha, that will save you some years in figuring out the beauty of street photographs! I believe he deserves a Magnum position because it will be a waste if he apes HCB or the others. Magnum is all about diversity.
