Okay why would you even consider the fact that they are doing this to themselves, they are young people, how are we suppose to know that this is not right, that you are suppose to eat, and adults should not tell you these things are normal.

how do you know what you're getting into at age 4/5?
also, her parents weren't "big" gymnasts. they were probably local level. but they promised themselves that thier first child would be a champion gymnasts (whether male or female). Perfect setting of stage parents.

i would not object to the hard training, njuries, and eating disorders if it pertained to grown football players, but these are children.
isn't self sacrifice to the point of physical and emotional pain a decision only adult minds should be making?

Her dad made the junior national team. That's a pretty good accomplishment in a major gymnastics country. I think her mom got to an elite level, but I don't have evidence of her making the national team.

I don't think eating disorders are good in any sport; gymnastics, football, etc. The sad reality is that female artistic gymnasts very often perform their best when their around 14, which means a lot of hard training at a young age.

Dominique didn't talk about the worst things that happened. She also claims Bela weighed her infront of the whole 2000 team and mocked her weight (she claimed she was 70 lbs them). He also yelled at Kim Zmeskal because of her weight and made her run outside with a sweater on in the summer. None of those gymnasts were big to begin with.

i honestly think it is different..i think if you look at shawn johnson..that is a different look at what elite and olympic gymnasts are like..but thats me..she has a life...and loves the sport..

yeah like i think now that "Shawn Johnson" is the new gymnast coaches and other gymnast look up 2,i think coaches less focus on the "stick thin" gymnast and tell their gymnast to be more like muscle like Shawn johnson

It says here they "shipped Dominique off to Houston." In her book it sounds like the family moved there - they didn't ship her off. Her little autobiography is pretty interesting, but then she wrote it before the 96 Olympics, so it's not like she was going to get into anything too controversial. Still it's a fun read with some great photos.

three is a dark side to the elite gymnastics scene.. but isn't there a dark side to most elite sports?? i think the main concern is just the difference in the age of an elite football player vs. a 12 year old elite gymnast,.

Girls can become junior elites when their 10. Most elites are training 8 hrs a day, which is like an incredibly demanding full-time job. I hope Liang Chow will produce more great gymnasts with the same approach he used with Shawn Johnson, who has a very healthy training regimen.

what a biased load of crap! If the gymnasts were committed to a developed
well thought-out training program, there would be minimal injuries, etc, erratic behaviors like poor diet, inconsistent daily routine, etc all contribute to issues of skill development
consistency. However it's that the joy of gymnastics has faded for some. It's a sport I still love dearly, and when the opportunity is there, I get in the gym and have a great time even after retiring from the sport in 96.

If your coach manipulated your parents to hit you if you gained weight or couldn't perform a skill correctly, you'd probably reconsider that opinion. (yes, Bela had Dominique's dad do this because he couldn't hit her himself) In Romania things were worse. Bela could hit his gymnasts and they were not allowed to go to the bathroom or use the shower in private because Bela didn't want them to drink excess water. Gymnasts and people who worked with Bela confirmed this.
