In the 80s, Cohen was on TV occasionally, but I knew him mostly from what the UK music press wrote about him (ooh, the clever metaphors, the made-up words).
Then I discovered that the Coil song 'Who By Fire' was a Cohen cover, so I acquired myself a greatest hits tape and was blown away.
The 'poet with guitar' format seems quite girly, but Cohen exposes raw emotion from a real male viewpoint (no macho posing), so for me it's very open and moving.
Still don't understand Sonny Rollins, though.

Noteworthy that those are the two singers from Was (Not Was) back there with Cohen's regular 1980s backup singers. This was on that amazing show, first it was called Sunday Night and then Night Music. Jools Holland and David Sanborn hosted the thing. I used to watch it when I was a kid - first time I saw so many amazing performers.

Not to be a nudnik here, but you are aware why Coil used this and what the lyrics are based on, correct? It is from the prayers on Yom Kippur detailing the decisions for the year to come. The 'Who' in question, is death.
