Actually he was an Orthodox Christian...and that was one of the reasons that the Catholic Church didn`t opposed when he was imprisoned by the Hungarians when he went to ask for help(the real reason is that the Hungarians wanted Wallachia, and the Catholic Church didn`t wanted the Byzantine Empire to rise again by liberating Constantinopole).The only thing that they didn`t think is that the Turks wanted all Europe not just Constantinopole, so they let Vlad free

The legend of Vlad as a demonic character(represented in this movie) is based upon the stories made by the Hungarians and of the Turks, and somehow accepted by the Vatican in those times(i allready told the reasons). Other chronicles of those times speak of him in quite different terms but i doubt that he will ever be rehabilitated in history because of this myth...

Vlad was never patronized as a saint, i can assure you of that. He converted to catholicism when he was imprisoned by the Hungarians(of course he was FORCED to convert because he was FORCED to marry someone from the Hungarian`s royal fammily, because as i said Hungary wanted to put its foot in Wallachia. The Catholic Church admited marriage only between Catholics. Unfortunatelly for them, Vlad had 3 brothers and a son from his first marriage)

He was no more sinner or saint than any other of the rulers of those times(you must not know the torturing methods used in those times). After his death his brother took the throne of Wallachia and after that he was followed by his first son with a Romanian noble woman. The Hungarian plans didn`t worked. The Romanians carried 500 years of war against the muslim Ottoman Empire. Its fall camed when Romania entered the Russo-Turkish war, took command of the Russian troops and liberated Bulgaria.

As i said those are legends made up by interests. If you really want to know, during Vlad`s lifetime, the greatest victories against the Ottomans were made by Stephen the Great, another Romanian who some assume that was Vlad`s cousin. He was the only ruler patronized as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church. Oh, and for your info the differences between Orthodox-Christians and Catholic-Christians are in the organization of the Church, not in religion.
