House, just because Pekar's strange wife calls Letterman a megalomaniac does not mean he is a megalomaniac. It was just something she said in the movie. Doesn't mean it therefore becomes your opinion. Get your own brain.

There is no way it was staged. Letterman seemed willing in other appearances to put up with Pekar's unbalanced behavior, but for whatever reason (we all have good days and bad days) Letterman didn't feel like playing along this one time. Plus Pekar called him a sellout, which Letterman wasn't at that time. I recall him endorsing Ron Paul in 1988 for the Libertarian Party. i.e. He wasn't an establishment guy back then. He just didn't look like he wanted to put up with an incorrigible person.

What Letterman should have said: "Look, Harvey! GE sucks! I know that, you that. But you know what? GE pays my salary! So if I WANT to keep getting paid, I have to go to their stupid little shindigs once in a while and pretended to love them! We all have to kiss our boss' ass occasionally! Don't act like you've never done that! If that makes me a sell-out, then so is every working man!" Then Harvey would say "Okay!" and be done with it. But NO! Dave pulls his old "yell down the guest" bullshit!

If you look at prior pekar appearences on lettermen you will see that they totally exploited him and misrepresented him a total wackjob or whatever... he always said that he only did the show to promote his book and felt like a sellout for doing so. Pekar is not a mainstream kinda artist and this is a totally mainstream kinda show. Harvey Pekar is a hero to blue collar stiifs who realize that so much of this world we live in is a sham. Thanks for the hard work, Harvey.

I'm a big fan of both these guys and while there's no denying that it's uncomfortable viewing it's also bullshit free. Dave lets his professionalism and Talkshow Host veneer slip when Harvey's getting in his face. Sad that such an odd, but unmissable, TV relationship had to end in this manner.
