As Masonic scholar Roy Wells suggested, it is likely that the Triple Tau derived from the letters IHS . . . ie. Iesous Hominem Salvitor. This use precedes the formation of the Jesuits, but was also used by them as part of their symbol.

A "Free Mason" models his name after "Stone Masons" in honour of there great skill, techniques, bonds and conduct. Essentially "Mason" means builder/worker/artist.
