Sonny Boy's using a ... ( 1 month ago by xrismoran)
Sonny Boy's using a G, cross harp. So that means the band is playing in D. This may also answer why Muddy's singing is so literally low-key on this rendition of the song. Muddy normally does "Mojo" in the key of E (that would make your harp an A harp, cross). It's possible Sonny Boy didn't have an A on hand and the band is accommodating him.

well we can get into the pissing contest of whos ear is better than whos. But lets stick to the facts. The fact is Sonny has some great records with "citified" bands. I guess you still havent come across them. If Hooker can fit in with the funk brothers (how much more city do you want than motown?) and make huge hits with them (hits you probably started liking him for like Boom Boom Boom) , why couldnt Buddy play with him? City+country is what made this time period so great. you dont get it
Trying to compare ... ( 1 month ago by byhudson)
Trying to compare the relationship b/w Wolf and Muddy is not at all accurate. Muddy and Sonny were friends before chicago. Look at Robert Lockwood for example. Talk about a sophisticated "citified" sound. Lockwood and Sonny got famous together (locally) on the King Biscuit show. This had a huge impact on Muddy. Infact, Sonny really helped Muddy out by letting him sit in sometimes and start creating a name for himself. Muddy and wolf however, not at all friends..
Basing your ... ( 1 month ago by byhudson)
Basing your comments on opinions and things you have made up in your own mind based on your own ear is fine. But if you want the reality of what it was like, the closest thing is finding people who were there or reading what people have written. I can tell you have done neither of these things and have created some false reality in your own mind. I suggest going back and reading and maybe trying to talk to an old timer or two. It will open your mind greatly and at the same time humble you.

OK mis-read what you wrote about Hooker, yes I agree that it would be the sidemen fitting in with him. Point is though, they could make it work. I totally disagree with your statements about Sonny though, infact that isnt even opionion it is documented fact that I guess you are not aware of. This tells me your ear is not as great as you think it is. Many would argue Sonny was much more sophisticated than Muddy. I really think you need to listen to more stuff or just listen better..

Then Lightnin' could have turned to the camera --crumpets and ice cream in hand-- and delivered his classic line, "Those British boys want to play the blues awfully bad, and you know, they DO play the blues AWFULLY BAD."
Muddy is "holding ... ( 1 month ago by xrismoran)
Muddy is "holding back" because 'Mojo" is normally played in E and not D as it is on this recording. Why they are playing in D is most likely because they were accommodating Sonny Boy using a G harp or somebody broke a string or whatever. By all the looks he shoots to Sir Rice Miller, Muddy obviously wasn't too thrilled with having Sonny Boy in the harp chair either. The British have a track record of ill-producing American Blues music. This was a good example of fattening frogs for snakes.
Well xrismoran, ... ( 1 month ago by themilum)
Well xrismoran, would not Richard Strauss accommodate Beethoven? Sonny Boy is the genius here, the others are merely the best.
Except for Willie Dixion who was a technician of the highest order and not a down and out singer and player of the Blues.
well that is all ... ( 1 month ago by byhudson)
well that is all conjecture and again your opinion, it certainly isnt obvious. Im not a fan of British "blues rock" or what ever they call it, but that is not the case here. Also "Fattening Frogs for Snakes" is out of context. You really have no idea why Muddy is "holding back", or why they decided to play in D (as if guys always played the same key)but if that is your opinion, you should state it as such instead of saying it like its fact.. Along with the rest of your rediculous comments.

As noted this is not Muddy's key and Sonny Boy is just noodling aimlessly.Muddy is not happy.I am a big fan of Sonny Boy,I know virtually all his recorded work. This clip is not reprsentative of him and is not pleasant viewing or listening.Even the greats had bad days or were just too plain drunk too do a proper job (as per here).

Seconded. To anyone new to the blues who watches this video, while it is true that Sonny Boy does derail this recording somewhat, please don't let this put you off Sonny Boy at all. He easily vies with Little Walter for the prize of "Greatest Blues Harpist Ever" and his work is definitely worth getting to know.
Peace guys.

That's what makes me love this version. Waters rides the instruments and plays with time. Other times, in more popular recordings he is driving the song. Same thing with Williamson- he is punctuating rather than playing long notes. You can see how bebop rise from some of the same choices choices that blues singers were making already.
