"Genuine controversy, fair cut and thrust before a common audience, has become in our special epoch very rare. For the sincere controversialist is above all things a good listener. The really burning enthusiast never interrupts; he listens to the enemy's arguments as eagerly as a spy would listen to the enemy's arrangements. But if you attempt an actual argument with a modern paper of opposite politics, you will find that no medium is admitted between violence and evasion." - G.K. Chesterton

I am going to write an essay on this film. I had the wrong impression of this man, but his arguments are still fundamentally flawed. It is difficult to refute so many of his points using this forum. Let me just say that "Light" did not mean force in the mind of Jefferson. We spread democracy and liberty more efficiently through commerce than the sword.

My ass, this is propoganda! This is PBS, for God's sake! If any American channel is left, it's this station! Holy hell, that they show a fair presentation of us neocons! It's almost under the radar they do this; almost unfair...I hope
pray for the best for the people in Iraq...

haha this is the biggest load of bs i've ever seen. it's not even remotely convenicing it's so bad. the reason why this doesn't fly on youtube is because most people who surf the web for news are a lot more educated to know there's a lot more to the conflicts then what's presented on this pos video.
Pretty good film, ... ( 1 year ago by tuckefresh)
Pretty good film, it shows a variety of different views. It's a bit ironic that even though Perle makes a big deal of the US's only 'successful' intervention, Silajdzic doesn't seem to back unilateralism. In all the other conflicts, Perle gets smashed. Even by Pat Buchanan!!
If Perle is so ... ( 1 year ago by tchicherine)
If Perle is so happy that Iraq held "free elections", perhaps he should consider honoring one of the central positions the current government ran on and then abandoned: a timetable for American withdrawal. Almost 80% of Iraqis want the United States to leave their country immediately. In the end, it doesn't matter what Perle thinks, or what you or I think. What matters is what the Iraqi people want for their own country.
If we cut and ran ... ( 8 months ago by richardrichard07)
If we cut and ran now we would only have to come back later because it would become a vortex of violence and the terrorists would take over. Most Iraqi people want US led coalition forces to remain in the region so to continue to offer security until they get their democracy and country back on its feet.
The only way to ... ( 8 months ago by KenMacMillan)
The only way to remove terrorism from Iraq is to pour in so many troops to be able to secure their borders so nobody at all can get in. Then rebuild the nation
fund it like Israel so it can defend itself. We can't afford that. The only other option I can think of is to mobilize the nation for war like WW2
remove radical Islam from the whole middle east. It would require bringing jobs back to the U.S. to fund it
in the long run it could restore the economy.

If you are gonna make an argument make sure you know the other side of it. When asked the question do you want the Americans to leave the same amount (80%)said no. Disagree with this war ok, but make a fair argument for your case and don't throw out half truths in your argument.

His heart seems to ... ( 4 months ago by Sarrisan98)
His heart seems to be in the right place, but his arguments are less than convincing. I think that's the problem with many neo-cons these days. They keep defending Iraq on the grounds of "we're helping Iraqis and that's good," instead of "Islamic Fascism is threat and we need to end it." With the former goal, indeed, the war is unwindable, especially with current policies. If we were fighting for the latter, and changed our policies to reflect that, than Iraq would have been won six years ago.
